The SEC has approved climate disclosures. Let's talk about that. - This is something 74% of Americans support - and it's not regulatory in the sense that something's being banned and standing in the way of good business. No one's saying companies can't do climate related things, just that they disclose when they do. Just like no one's stopping companies from producing candy, but they are required to disclose what's in that candy bar. This empowers the consumer, and Americans love freedom of choice. - Studies have consistently shown that increasing transparency and accountability on company activity improves overall behavior, especially when pollution is involved. - By disclosing their activity, companies will educate their own people on said activity, encouraging possible needed change from within. - It will encourage competition, because those taking the short cuts before now have to admit that. According to leading scientists, the primary barrier to climate action is often linked to political and economic factors, particularly the influence of the fossil fuel industries and others with vested interests in the status quo. To change the playing field, responsible companies have a unique role to play. Today is #EarthDay - marked on 22nd April since 1970 to demonstrate support for environmental protection. It's a great reminder that our world is too small for us to be able to dump our trash without consequence. This year the focus is on microplastics - it was University of Newcastle that first published research a few years ago that showed that we each eat about a credit card's worth of plastic each week, embedded in our food. More recently, others have shown that the situation is even worse, with things like bottled water packed with microplastics. This week also sees the US Climate Action Summit taking place in Washington DC. The US (and Europe, for that matter) has lagged China by a long way in investing in renewable energy and industrial decarbonisation - two massively important levers in *reducing* operating costs for many businesses over the medium to longer term, whilst simultaneously creating new employment opportunities in the near term. America's Inflation Reduction Act has had a huge impact on activity here in the USA - and the underlying politics mean that this legislation is very likely here to stay irrespective of the outcome of the election. 📢 New study highlighting the benefits of carbon offsetting in corporate climate strategies A compelling new study that underscores the importance of carbon offsetting in corporate climate action. Conducted by Ash Farber at the Swedish University of Agricultural Sciences (SLU), this research demonstrates that companies engaging in carbon offsetting are more proactive in their climate strategies, including effective emission reductions, compared to those that do not.   🔍 Key Findings: 📌Companies that purchase carbon credits tend to implement more ambitious climate actions. 📌These companies show higher engagement in reducing emissions across their value chains. 📌 Data from the Carbon Disclosure Project (CDP) supports these findings, highlighting the positive correlation between offsetting practices and comprehensive climate strategies. #Bookmark The July 2024 Global Environmental Journal has published Catherine Cherry + Caroline Verfuerth, PhD + Christina Demski's peer-reviewed findings that "Discourses of climate inaction undermine public support for 1.5 °C lifestyles". The 5 top #Highlights of their findings: i) We conducted unique public visioning workshops on radical low-carbon lifestyles. ii) We found strong public support for many low-carbon lifestyle strategies and futures. iii) Narratives of inaction create a public discourse of delay, undermining this support. iv) Narratives of inaction held emotional resonances that evoked defensive responses. v) Countering this public discourse of delay is essential for meaningful climate action.
