For Amazon shoppers, Prime Day is as simple as finding an item they like and purchasing it. But at the Haslet Air Hub at Fort Worth Alliance Airport, the Seattle-based e-commerce giant is pulling out all the stops to make sure items are delivered on time, even if it means sending them airborne. Amazon delivered to Prime members at the fastest speeds ever in 2023—and is working to get even faster in 2024. One thing we’ve learned about customers over the years is the importance they place on delivery speed. The faster we can get products to customers, the more likely they are to buy them. To that end, we reached an important delivery speed milestone in 2023: Amazon delivered to Prime members at the fastest speeds ever globally, with more than 7 billion units arriving the same or next day, including more than 4 billion in the U.S. and more than 2 billion in Europe. #amazon #ecommerce #delivery #speed #drone #customerexperience

First, it was Amazon, now it's Walmart. I'm certain that other big-box retailers will follow suit, especially with the uplift in orders Walmart saw when improving transit times. It'll be more and more difficult for non-big-box retailers to compete in a market with consumers trained to expect next-day (or same-day) delivery. It begs the question: Why don't more retailers experiment with the impact of transit times on their customer experience? Here's my take: 1. It's hard to test. It requires either big volume or lots of time. For small shippers, testing enough volume to achieve statistical significance can be a long, painstaking process. If you do have the volume, you have to isolate your variables (fulfillment time, existing order rate, etc) to make sure your data is clean. Once you run your test and find that improving time in transit does make a difference, you have another problem. 2. It's expensive. Without Amazon's deep pockets or Walmart's massive physical footprint, margins are often already too tight to upgrade everyone to next-day shipping. 3. Implementation is complex. It's unlikely that you can simply choose a more expensive service with your existing carrier and call it a day. You'll likely need to look at network fulfillment centers, zone-skipping, and specialty carriers to decrease your implementation cost. Once that's done, warehousing and shipping operations are far more complex. The bottom line is that consumers are malleable, and the big boys are training them to think everything should be delivered NOW. And it's a smart tactic since competing on that is extremely difficult for anyone other than the biggest, most scaled businesses. #walmart #amazon #ecommerce https://lnkd.in/gvrYpEMH

‘Target launches a $49 subscription service for customers wanting quick delivery’ Not sure what to make of this. Target is obviously very late to the paid loyalty program party. And trailing Walmart and Amazon on same-day delivery. Is there demand to pay for Target same-day delivery? [vs free drive up, which continues to grow] Does it improve Shipt unit economics? [cut 3% staffing in October] Doubtful. Since same-day orders aren’t combined with next-day orders. [to improve driver route density] Interested to see how this service performs. #ecommerce #retailing #samedaydelivery

Amazon's threat is real and imminent. With two new distribution centers planned by 2026 and an expanding Prime delivery network, retailers must innovate around customer needs or risk falling behind. Retailers need real-time delivery and personalised customer experiences across the whole customer journey. In my article with Retailbiz I outline the impact of recent legislative changes on Amazon's delivery network in Australia: https://lnkd.in/gmyWtypK #Amazon #Commerce #Innovation #CustomerNeeds

Retail Delivery: Balancing Expectations and Realities 🚚 As Amazon pioneers futuristic drone distribution and same-day delivery becomes the norm, smaller retailers face a dilemma: Are they biting off more than they can chew to keep pace? eTail™ ran a survey of 100 European retail Directors of Operations and revealed a stark reality: 73% agree that offering impractical delivery options risks losing loyal customers. Van restrictions and Brexit-induced border complexities compound these challenges. In response, industry disruptors like Argos and Amazon offer lightning-fast deliveries, while Screwfix champions click-and-collect within an hour. Yet, meeting evolving customer demands while preserving margins remains a tightrope act. Flexibility emerges as crucial, with customers expecting order modifications and retailers navigating peak demand fluctuations. Striking the balance between service quality and feasibility is paramount, as acquiring new customers far outweighs retaining existing ones. In this delivery race, brands must prioritise delivering what's promised over flashy innovations, ensuring customer satisfaction remains the cornerstone of success. 📦 #RetailDelivery #CustomerSatisfaction #SupplyChainChallenges #ecommerce #shippinginsurance

Amazon has removed it a just walk out tech and replaced it with DASHCART smart shopping carts that still allow customers to skip the checkout line. However the customer has to scan each item unlike the old tech which was done by cameras and human associated monitoring the video. It is clear Amazon wasn’t able to roll out the old tech to other grocery chains because of its expense. The new carts don’t require retrofitting stores since they are stand alone tech. It still collects data on the purchases and doesn’t require additional labour to monitor since the customer has to scan the goods. Even self checkout hasn’t turned out to be a time saver for consumers when you need to find the code for the fresh produce. #amazon #justwalkout #selfcheckout #grocery #technology
