QUESTION: how important is it to have your main characters in relatable daily situations? I’ve worked on many developments, and the point that keeps coming up is placing the main characters in situations that the audience can relate to: home life, friends, and SCHOOL. This point usually comes from producers and broadcasters execs- ‘let’s make sure our main cast of kids is seen in school’. ‘If the main characters are of elementary school age let’s put them in elemantary school/little school/high school’ Personally I don’t know any kids who come home from school and want to watch cartoons about kids being in school. And using the usual tropes of school bully, homework issues, friends and family, seems to cast each show into the same framework. Peter Parker was fresh 50 years ago but is it still relevant to set your characters into this ‘close to life’ reality? Or can characters exist without building this ‘relatable’ construct around them? Specifically the school situation. Is it necessary to the characters, storytelling and finally, the target audience?

Just interviewed a creative Kindergarten teacher and was so excited to see #Numberblocks stuffies on her filing cabinet! These adorable characters can introduce 6 months of K standards in a fun and engaging way. Right in line with my dissertation - a quick video can be a hook and prep kids for hands-on learning. My son is already a huge fan, and I can see why. Check out the episodes here: https://lnkd.in/eB4A2Ecn #education #earlylearning #innovativeteaching #teachingtools

Former TV executive turned development consultant: Streamlining development for overwhelmed scripted teams, saving time and money.
FIRST WIVES CLUB - If anyone else refused to subscribe to yet another streamer, FWC is now on #Netflix. Enjoy. #NoSpoilers I'm trying to figure out why it's called FWC because other than Hazel's character taking on a trait from all three original characters from the film, Ari's daughter being poly (vs not straight heterosexual), and a forced bosun chair moment, it stands on its own. I blame the network or studio or whoever thought this comedy series needed to be attached to that IP in order to be successful. It didn't. Black folks watch black content. No gimmicks needed. Though I love the original, I actually wasn't interested in seeing the series because of the remake aspect. It didn't feel necessary. And, it wasn't. Glad I decided to watch. Well, actually, it automatically came on after I rewatched GET OUT. Lol. Weird. Though, tonally, it isn't my cup of tea - there are unnecessarily on-the-nose moments and comedic moments that fall flat - it is a well-structured show. If you're looking to learn how to write 1/2hr single-camera dramedies, FWC is a good teacher. Each episode has a clear goal with clear complications. TV writers often get stuck on how to write past the pilot. FWC handles the serialized throughline well, with every episode having a goal that gets our three protagonists closer to or farther from their overall goals of the season. Have you P.S. Ronreco is SOOO underrated. 🟢 You don't need script coverage. You need Development Notes. Submit your script for detailed page-by-page feedback from our Story Experts to beef up your screenwriting portfolio. www.TheProfessionalPen.com
