At the end of July and through early August, riots swept across the UK after a horrific stabbing in Southport. Disinformation about the suspect in the attack rapidly proliferated online, and far-right groups seized the opportunity to organise violent anti-immigration protests that left businesses in ruins, hundreds injured and an entire country on edge. Current policy allows content that is 'legal but harmful' to remain online, but the Southport riots show just how harmful that loophole can be. Disinformation played a direct and outsized role in the riots, and ordinary people are the ones who paid the price. Read our latest blog to see GDI's analysis of the most prominent narratives that contributed to the riots, and our take on how we move policy forward to stop this from happening again. https://lnkd.in/dK4H-SdV #UK #UKdisinformation #Southport #Southportriots #Southportattack #UKriots #disinformation #riotsdisinformation #antiimmigration #islamophobia #whitesupremacy #Telegram #Telegramchannels #conspiracytheories #onlinedisinformation #techaccountability #contentmoderation

Police: Focusing on Constructive Engagement over Repression The recent arrest and subsequent transfer of 76 suspects, including a foreigner, for allegedly flying Russian flags during the nationwide hunger protest in Kano State have raised significant concerns about the approach being taken by the Nigeria Police Force. While the protests led to unfortunate incidents of violence and destruction, it is crucial to recognize that these actions were driven by deep-seated frustrations and legitimate grievances of the Nigerian people. The protests were not just about flying flags; they were a desperate cry for change in the face of widespread hardship. The core issues that fueled these protests—rising hunger, exorbitant fuel prices, and the lack of meaningful opportunities for the youth—remain unresolved. The energy and resources currently being directed towards prosecuting citizens for sedition would be better spent addressing the root causes of the unrest. Here's a concrete solution to alleviate the crisis at the US border: End the tyranny of Nicolas Maduro in Venezuela. NOW! This Sunday, Maduro shamelessly declared himself the winner of the presidential election despite losing 70% of the votes to the opposition candidate. People began taking to the streets in outrage. The unrest is escalating rapidly and will likely end with thousands of civilian deaths and incarcerations if the regime prevails. But... here's why this matters to the US. Fifteen years of Maduro's narco-dictatorship led to an economic collapse and a dismantling of civic institutions. This led to 8 million people leaving Venezuela out of desperation in the last decade. Yes, you read it right... 8 million! To give you an order of magnitude -- that's about 1/3 of the nation's population. Gone. Poof! And, hundreds of thousands of them keep piling up at the US border, seeking asylum from this psychopath. The crisis at the US border will only worsen if Maduro prevails. We can't afford to let this happen. Here's to a free Venezuela! https://lnkd.in/efqdTqZ3

Is Georgia the next Ukraine? A must-read article whether one is pro-West or East The West is correct to criticize the Georgian NGO law (though we should remember that most Americans would consider it absolutely intolerable if foreign institutions, especially ones linked to foreign states, played the leading part in funding de facto political groups within the U.S.). However, Western governments and NGOs should be very careful not to allow condemnation of the law and sympathy for protests against it to become support for efforts actually aimed at overthrowing the elected Georgian government. https://lnkd.in/ec8nBGzE

This is the effect of massive government, happening in every country of the world, and the United States leads in its desecration of limited government by usurpation of the United States Constitution. Elected and unelected bureaucrats are responsible for this devastation of liberty. Government is not a series of buildings, it is individual people making decisions to destroy liberty under the guise of ‘what’s good for them (you).’ Do not blame private enterprise for the failure of politicians to hold to the oath they take. The elected bureaucrats have created a 271+ unconstitutional federal agencies fifedom, to offer their patronage, rent seeking and favoritism. (Hence massive lobbying). Your local governments are no better as they tax and regulate you into poverty. Read: How Do I Tax Thee? by Kristin Tate and wake up!

Belarusian authorities imposed disproportionate sanctions, such as administrative fines and detentions, on demonstrators for their participation in unauthorized peaceful protests and for sharing news deemed “extremist” by domestic authorities. The UN HRC determined that such restrictions were not justified and did not meet the three-part test to limit the right to freedom of expression under Article 19 of the ICCPR, says Lautaro Furfaro, CGFoE expert. Learn more about the alarming cases of breaching #FoE in #Belarus, including the predicaments of human rights defenders, in our newsletter. https://lnkd.in/eR4Y2huG

We strongly condemn the excessive use of force by Pakistani security forces against peaceful protesters in Chaman. At least three people have been killed and 38 others injured due to Frontier Corps’ firing. Disturbing visuals show armored vehicles patrolling the streets and attempting to suppress the peaceful assembly. Reports also indicate that protesters have been abducted, and internet and media services have been disrupted. Since October 2023, residents of Chaman have peacefully protested the Pakistani government's new passport and visa requirements for crossing the Afghan border. This policy disrupts a long-standing tradition of easy movement that supported cross-border trade and the livelihoods of many, particularly small businesses. It is deeply concerning that the state of Pakistan has always prioritized force over dialogue. This peaceful sit-in has been disrupted by security forces several times with aggressive measures, including indiscriminate firing, detaining protesters and their leader, and even burning tents. This heavy-handed approach reflects a failure to address the protesters' legitimate concerns. We urge the Pakistani government to immediately de-escalate the situation, respect the right to peaceful assembly, and engage in meaningful dialogue with the protesters. We call for an independent investigation into human rights violations and a peaceful resolution that respects the rights and livelihoods of the people in Chaman.

Saddened to see the recent immigration protests across the UK. While I fully support the right to peacefully protest, this kind of violent behaviour has no place in our society. https://lnkd.in/e2x6VGA5 We need to move the conversation beyond entrenched positions and recognise the great benefits migration plays for both UK business and every individual in the workforce. With the UK's immigration system creating all sorts of issues, particularly the growing modern slavery and displaced worker crisis within the care sector, we urgently need clearer leadership, more thoughtful policies and better education to take the heat out of these situations. Building a world where borders are no longer barriers, and anyone can move anywhere, seamlessly and safely, is central to our mission & vision at Borderless.
