Nothing alienates your customers like not speaking their language. So much of marketing content is about selling products, not solving problems. A few years ago, we had a prospect who initially stated, "I don’t think we need B2B Commerce." I quickly put together a demo and sent him a 3-minute recording showcasing how he could utilize self-service on the Salesforce platform. He started his next call with, "When can I have that self-service portal?" What made the difference for him was the functionality (e.g., the self-service portal) rather than the product (B2B Commerce) itself. It was essentially the same technical solution, but we presented its functionality in a strategic play, rather than attempting to sell a product directly. Customers are increasingly looking for solutions to their specific challenges, and the better we can demonstrate how our 'plays' address their most pressing issues, the more engaged they will be with us. Here’s something I’ve learned from my years of selling—if I can’t summarize their biggest problem and how our solution solves that problem, there is a 0% chance they are interested in my product. To truly connect with potential clients, we need to shift our focus from product features to real-world applications that simplify their lives and enhance their business operations.
