Black Cat Awareness Month is a wonderful time to consider adopting a black cat into your home. Black cats are lucky and they are so worthy of your attention and your heart. We celebrate their beauty and value while encouraging their adoption because everyone deserves the chance to be owned by a precious mini panther. In ancient Egyptian times, black cats were often viewed as divine creatures in whom the gods lived. The Irish believed that finding a black cat on the porch was good luck, and the Japanese hold black cats in high esteem as symbols of prosperity. Black cats deserve to be adopted like all cats but they are often dismissed out of misled beliefs, fears, or silly superstitions. As the age-old saying goes, if you happen to cross paths with a black cat, you should stop and take the time to pet the kitty - better yet think about adoption! Consider yourself lucky to be in the presence of a beautiful and magnificent mini panther! If you are looking for a feline friend, we hold adoption events every Saturday from 1 PM to 5 PM in the Adoption Center inside the Roswell PetSmart. Additional adoption times can be made by appointment only with an approved application. Three months into our new strategic plan, and check! Progress being made. Like most strategic plans, the proof's in the pudding. Plans aren't made to sit on a shelf. I'm super proud of the OHS team, who's making sure that doesn't happen. One of the pillars of the new strategic plan is to provide more second changes for all animals - and our community was pretty specific: they're concerned about homeless cats. So, we need to find out more, to figure out how best to help. Ottawa connections - can you help? YOU ONLY NEED ONE MINUTE! To achieve our goal, we've launched a very quick survey about outdoor cats. Putting children and families first in Philadelphia means not forgetting about their furry family members. The neighborhoods surrounding the families we serve aren't the most environmentally equitable, which can impact the mental health of both individuals and groups. This is detrimental to someone's physical health, as we've discussed in-depth in the ACEs study thanks to Dr. Nadine Burke Harris. I'm grateful to be a part of the C.A.R.E Companions and Animals for Reform and Equity team and their holistic approach to their mission. The stats on how many animals are currently displaced and how many of them could be in loving homes is staggering. Allowing families to provide the love they have to offer to animals would be impactful to the mental health of children, families and communities. We know that our government and systems in place push for policies and legislation that don't benefit the communities we seek to transform. By shifting restrictions to housing animals and allowing organizations like CARE to support families with resources, we can sustain the well-being of both the animal and the family. While we work on challenging housing policies, human and animal well-being, and other inequities, we have the power to create neighborhoods that we all want to be a part of and live in. Neighborhoods that we would be comfortable and feel safe enough to walk our animals and raise our families. We have a rare opportunity here, not just for Philly but for other cities as well. It takes courage and vision to be an early adopter.

Every Wednesday at New Westminster City Hall, we have soup and bannock with staff and our Elder in Residence, Elder William. Here are a few of us making bannock today. We call our soup and bannock lunches, 'tawâw'. The meaning of tawâw (a Cree word pronounced ta-WOW) — 'there is room', 'you are welcome'. We borrowed it from the cookbook of the same name by Shane Chartrand, an Indigenous Chef. The impact this weekly lunch is having on staff is difficult to describe, but the word 'profound' always comes to mind. Sitting and eating soup and bannock with an Indigenous Elder and residential school survivor, and with one another is breaking down walls and building bridges, not just between Indigenous and non-Indigenous, but between staff and leadership, council and community and department to department. It is breaking down silos and encouraging vulnerability, humanity and kindness. Elder William calls City of New Westminster staff, "family". We are building a real community together simply by sharing a bowl of soup and a laugh. There is no expectation, there is no agenda and there are no barriers. The only rule we have is to leave your title at the door. It is so simple and so impactful and as an Indigenous woman working within a colonial government, I can personally say that it is healing each and every one of us in very different ways. Change starts at the core and radiates out. We are beginning into a new era for the Humane Society of Cowlitz County. The next phase will include a complete remodel of our facilities to match our new vision, mission, and purpose. Modern Widows Club is planning another Widows' Health & Wellbeing Day at the Crosby Center for Health & Wellbeing. Huge gratitude to Winter Park Health Foundation for being the first to step forward and value #widows in Central FL as a community asset in which to invest. In 2023, we welcomed 120 registered participants, along with a few walk-ins, into a transformative experience that significantly benefited their health, social connections, and overall sense of well-being. It was impactful for them to feel cared about, seen, heard, and understood. Our initiatives have been instrumental in decreasing feelings of depression, exhaustion, confusion, and overwhelm, as well as reducing fear, anger, and disinterest in personal health. Conversely, they have enhanced confidence, joy, a sense of purpose and meaning, community connection and an interest in personal health and future opportunities. We refer to this positive impact as a community uplift for everyone involved. It's important to note the prevalence of #widowhood in our area: Winter Park, FL, is home to 1,600 widows, Orange County, FL, has 36,500 widows, and Seminole County, FL, counts 23,000 widows among its residents. Who are they, what do they need, how can we help?
