International Energy Agency (IEA) “Electricity Grids and Secure Energy Transitions” report launched. The rapid growth of renewables like solar & wind is a key part of clean energy transitions. But grids, which bring the electricity to consumers, aren't keeping up. Investment in renewables has nearly doubled since 2014. For grids, it has barely changed. Explore the full report: https://iea.li/45xqRrZ Grids are becoming a bottleneck, with potentially serious impacts on clean energy transitions & electricity security. Our analysis shows a growing queue of advanced stage renewables projects - about 1,500 gigawatts' worth - waiting to be connected to the grid in key markets. If investments in grids aren't scaled up quickly & regulatory reforms are slow, it will result in slower growth of renewables, higher fossil fuel use & stronger global warming. It would mean almost 60 billion tonnes of extra CO2 emissions between 2030 & 2050. “We need immediate action on grids. This is because while renewable projects can move forward in a matter of months or years, the timelines for grids can be a decade or longer. Our report provides key recommendations to prevent grids from undermining energy transitions & security.” Fatih Birol #decarbonisation #electrification #grid #transmission #netzero #cop28

💡 FUN FACT FRIDAY 💡 While renewable energy capacity is on the rise, we must address the urgent need to reduce energy-related CO2 emissions. According to the International Energy Agency (IEA), over a third of global energy will be generated by renewables by 2025. However, in 2022, energy-related CO2 emissions increased by 0.9%, indicating the challenges we still face. 📈🌿 The production, transportation, and processing of oil and gas were responsible for a staggering 5.1 billion tonnes of CO2 emissions in 2022, accounting for nearly 15% of total energy-related greenhouse gas emissions. 🛢️🌬️ To combat this, the IEA's Net Zero by 2050 (NZE) scenario outlines the need to halve the emissions intensity of oil and gas activities by the end of this decade, leading to a 60% reduction in total emissions from oil and gas operations. It's a crucial step towards a more sustainable future. ♻️💪 We must accelerate our transition to cleaner energy sources and implement innovative solutions to reduce carbon footprints across all sectors. Together, we can make a lasting impact and achieve a net-zero future. 🌎💚✨ Read the full article here: https://lnkd.in/ehQumQJ5 Check out the company here: World Economic Forum #RenewableEnergy #ClimateAction #NetZero2050

📝 Huge investments are needed for the green transition. According to the latest BloombergNEF report, governments and companies need to spend an extra $34 trillion on the #energytransition between now and 2050 to reach net-zero emissions. Here are the main conclusions of the New Energy Outlook report: 💡 Carbon capture technologies will require $6.8 trillion worth of investment to trap emissions not just from industry, but also the power sector. 💡 In parallel, investments in power grid projects will peak at about $1 trillion per year in the 2040s – similar to the investment required for renewable energy generation in that decade. 💡 Whether countries pursue policies needed to get on track for net zero by 2050 or not, the share of renewables in the global electricity mix could still be higher than 50% by the end of the decade. MET Group is dedicated to supporting a sustainable energy future for Europe.
