Did you know? The state tree of Arizona is the Palo Verde, and it comes in two native species: Foothill Palo Verde and Blue Palo Verde. These trees are special because they can photosynthesize through their green bark, which gives them their signature look. The role of small habitats in supporting pollinators is increasingly undeniable. A recent study from the UK’s University of Lancaster in collaboration with Michigan and Washington State Universities investigated the effectiveness of what they called ‘pollinator planting interventions’. They found that smaller plots of planted wildflowers were associated with the largest increase in pollinator abundance. Over 4 years, the study’s 300 sq ft plots (think 15’ x 20’) recorded a whopping 160% increase in pollinators (# bees jumped from 1,360 to 3,550). Consider this increase cumulatively at a landscape scale within neighborhoods, and these small interventions feel anything but. That’s the thinking behind our mighty Greenway Network that is building overlapping habitat gardens that support diverse wildlife and insects to create a broad swathe of impactful refuge within blocks, neighborhoods and townships. A story of bison, cows, displacement and restoration… 1. Bison are native to prairies, which are flat grasslands, mainly located in the US and Canada. 2. But wild bison numbers plummeted from 60 million to barely 800 in the in the few decades to 1889. 3. Market forces and government policy replaced bison and native peoples with ranches, white settlements and cattle. 4. But cows aren’t native to prairies, which meant their arrival had adverse effects on the ecosystem. 5. When it’s hot, cows gravitate to creek bottoms for shade and cool water. When it's cold, they hunker down behind creekside shrubs to shelter from the wind. This constant presence at water-bodies led to over-grazing, shrub decline, stream bank erosion, dry soils and an influx in non-native grasses. 6. But bison are now getting a second chance. 7. Tribal reservations are at the forefront of their recovery, taking excess bison from Yellowstone National Park and restoring them to treaty lands. 8. About 30,000 bison now exist in conservation herds in various parks and protected areas across the country. 9. This is great news for nature, because not only are bison adapted to prairie life, but the prairie is adapted to bisons. 10. Native prairie plants use the nutrients in bison dung to grow (which is good, given that an adult bison eats 11kg of grass a day). 11. Birds pluck bison fur from bushes to insulate their nests. 12. Bison roll in the dust and create indentations known as ‘wallows’ that hold water after rainstorms. After the bison move on,  insects flourish in these pools and become a feast for birds and small mammals. 13. Pronghorn antelope survive by following bison tracks through deep winter snows. 14. And when bison do visit streams and ponds to drink, they move on quickly, preferring the grasses on the sunbaked uplands to woody shrubs in the river bottoms. 15. 8 CR Rs have been allocated for planting 15000 + saplings by BMRCL. This can be done in 3-4 ways. 1. Plant in a row besides the roads 2. Create a green base with park along with birds and animals habitat 3. Plant near water basin areas such as ponds and streams 4. Restore hill area plantations First method may end up cutting trees in future. Second method seems to be BEST as an immediate solution. As phase 2 and Phase 3, second and third methods can be followed.

For me, it’s never been about the profits—but it’s encouraging to see stories like this gaining attention.
