Every year, I go into Cannes a bit cynical, questioning whether it is all a bit performative. This year, however, I had a very different experience. Sure, there were certainly still aspects that were more spectacle than substance, but on the whole, I was inspired – by the work, by the camaraderie, and by the emphasis on true #creativity. For every benign, redundant mention of AI, there was an impassioned case made for the power of originality and unexpected creativity. I might have expected this from creative agencies, but I was most encouraged by the championing of creativity from the esteemed panel of CMO’s at Forbes' Most Influential CMO Luncheon. Perhaps, we are collectively over the seduction of predictability and (faux) certainty. Perhaps, we are all realizing the diminishing returns of relentlessly pursued risk mitigation. Perhaps, the extremes of either dull sameness or shallow gimmicks will yield to smart, beautiful, big, bold, important ideas that build real brands and drive real business and if we are lucky, move society forward along the way. I left Cannes feeling the renaissance has begun and that TBWA is exactly the right place to be for it, where Disruption is not a catchphrase, but an essence and a mandate. My optimism was a direct result of spending time with Kyle Chayka, Lucia Aniello, Ben Tallon, Flau’jae Johnson, Beatrice Domond, Seth Matlins, The amazing women hosted by The Female Quotient, our ambitious clients, and my fellow Pirates. As my partner Bruno Regalo says, a new season starts now – so may we all contribute to the renaissance and show up in Cannes next year with work that makes us proud. The best strategist is always the company CEO. I pride myself on strategy but the truth is - I mostly vocalise in either a clearer it more entertaining way - what I hear other people say. In that way, - I am a hypocrite - albeit a fairly elegant and non malevolent one. 😃 What I admire about intelligent men, women or children is "their habit is to be disarming - to state their fulcrum case with simplicity and humility - admitting the thorough impossibility of their achieving their goal without their audience's assistance. Let's just look past how young I look compared to the Santa-in-waiting I see when I now look in the mirror. I want to tell you a story... These are the MBNA geeks - the centre piece of a major rebrand we launched (with loads of help from TBWA\MCR) back in 2015. It was great work, and helped to supercharge MBNA brand recognition. But, that's not the story. Fast forward to a year later, and to mark the launch of the second phase of the campaign (which saw Jenny Monks buy a van - more on that another time), we bring the geeks into the MBNA head office in Chester to meet the broader team. It was a great day, with the geeks hamming it up for the staff, and generally being wonderful. To launch the campaign internally, I'm joined on stage by Paul Sinclair. The event is screened throughout the building - so about 2,000 people watching. Paul and I tag-team on telling the story behind the work, before sharing the ad and bringing the geeks out on stage. It was a great event. The only issue: as I walk off stage, feeling pretty bloody good about the event - one we (or, more accurately, Jenny Monks) had carefully managed down to the last detail - I realise that I was given a gift by my 4 year-old daughter before I left for work. A fairy sticker had been deposited on my arse, and as a 'walker' when presenting, it had 100% been visible to those even without a keen eye. Stress is horrific and dangerous. It can cause an adverse effect on your health, your wellbeing and your relationships. But not all stress is equal. Because when it’s born from a desire to satisfy your own or shared vision - rather than succumbing to the pressure and isolation of others - it can, as Si points out below, be a sign of giving a f*ck. It may not be cool to talk about ‘graft’ these days (which is very different to the dangers of ‘hustle culture’) but it’s still the foundation of standing any chance to make, do or create something special. We don’t talk about that enough. Not because I ever want to advocate for stress, but because I do want to celebrate craft, creativity and care. Or should I say, I want the people who act/claim they have all the answers to respect and acknowledge it … given they’ve never made any actual work and haven’t got the faintest idea what it takes or costs to make something proper good. Commercially, creatively, emotionally or artistically. So well done to everyone who put their work out there to be judged and criticised, regardless of the result. Few do. Few would. Because even though it’s business, it’s always - absolutely always - personal.
We had a great year on stage at Cannes. But instead of posting a photo of the high, here’s a photo of the low. I snuck this photo a few months ago. We were mid-production on Pedigree Adoptable, which won 4 lions this week including the Outdoor Grand Prix 🏆🏆🏆🏆 I love Duncan’s turmoil in this image. Not because I'm a psycho, but because that's how much he cared about every detail. The other thing I love is Hadleigh laughing in the corner. Comradery and fun in the hard times is the only way you make it through. Like I said in my award show speech, ambition without drive is worthless. Thank you team Colenso, for always having the drive to push through the impossible moments.
