A DIFFERENT APPROACH TO PORTFOLIO I am often heard saying “if you focus on satisfying consumer needs, customer missions and shopper journeys price becomes less of a deciding factor.” This is a perfect example of that philosophy. For years many manufacturers resisted creating cross-category tie-ins. A number of justifications were given as to why, the most rational of which was that ‘the likely sales wouldn’t justify the required space on retailer shelves.’ The justifications though do not change the fact that there is a consumer need or a customer mission to satisfy. The great thing about digital commerce is that it is possible to launch niche products and build a scalable and sustainable market for them. Here is an example of exactly that from The Coca-Cola Company Customers mix #coke , Sprite and other drinks with vodka, rum, bourbon and other spirits. If they do it themselves then there is likely to be a market for pre-made drinks, that can (potentially) be priced at a premium. The premium is justified by the convenience, by the pack format, by the hybrid nature of the product and by the combined quality of both ‘mixed’ products. Customers that buy this product won’t be doing so because of price. Gourmet Pakistan Beverages - The most idiotic brand of Pakistan! With the ongoing boycott against Israeli goods especially Pepsi and Coca-Cola, it is prime time for other less established beverage brands like Gourmet Beverages to seize the opportunity and capitalize on it. When else will they ever get the opportunity to compete in such an oligopolistic market? Cola Next is doing a really nice job with their distribution channels and is effectively taking the entire market share Pepsi and Coca-Cola have been leaving. Gourmet Cola should follow suit too. They should leave everything else and start cashing on this. Improve their distribution channels, enhance their marketing and just blow the market away. Saying this especially for Gourmet Beverages since I did a project on Gourmet Cola about a couple of years ago and the results showed such promising results that we were practically stunned. *TRIGGER WARNING* Mentions chocolate. Aha, 'a nice Cadbury Wispa chocolate pot' I thought. The familiar purple packaging was like a beacon of trust - I knew what I was going to get, the quality, the flavour. Except, I didn't. From the moment I touched the pot, and felt the packaging, a foreboding sense of doom started to circle as I realised that this wasn't the chocolate delight I was hoping for. As I dug in, I was confirmed - I could have bought a supermarket's own brand version for less than half the price, and it would have tasted the same. So next time, avoid the Cadbury Wispa pots and just grab the cheapest ones you can. Because at least you'll be expecting those ones to taste of bland fuzzy mousse with a hint of fake chocolate. ----- The moral? Make sure your product lives up to the marketing hype. Some products you can make look really nice and heighten the experience for the customer. Others, you can't. #marketing #chocolate
