A recent report from youth homelessness charity Centrepoint, shows a £300 – 400 million funding gap for local authorities to support young people (https://ow.ly/I29L50RuZnS), Steve Sawyer, Managing Director for Access Health, Support and Care commented: “The exceptional levels of investment that councils need to be able to assess and support young people facing homelessness is staggering. With many local authorities facing financial challenges, and in some cases, bankruptcy, it’s vital that they receive adequate support from government. Whilst technology isn’t a silver bullet in this context, there is evidence of councils using digital solutions to improve the management of temporary accommodation for families and young people. For example, by introducing our digital housing management system (https://ow.ly/PuCY50RuZnU), Milton Keynes City Council has been able to quickly and effectively match people to housing that is suited to their specific needs, including disability requirements, educational needs, and health and social care support. We believe these types of changes can deliver cost-effective and immediate benefits for councils, which can go some way to help address the urgent challenges whilst the longer-term issue of funding is addressed.” #LocalGovernment #Health #DigitalHousing #Management

🏡 Homelessness is a growing crisis in Scotland, demanding innovative and sustainable financing solutions to meet the scale of the challenge. This article from Scottish Housing News highlights how social investment, led by Social and Sustainable Capital (SASC), is helping to provide safe and affordable housing for those in need. Through its Social and Sustainable Housing (SASH I & II) funds, SASC provides flexible loans to specialised charities and social enterprises, enabling them to purchase properties and provide much-needed homes for those at risk of homelessness. 🌱 We are proud to have invested in SASC’s first-generation funds, alongside Social Investment Business, to help charities overcome barriers to buying and managing properties. By co-developing tailored financing structures, these organisations can scale their impact and meet the growing demand for secure, affordable homes. In Scotland, this approach has supported organisations like Simon Community Scotland, Positive Steps Partnership in Dundee and Homes for Good Glasgow, enabling them to provide life-changing housing solutions and stability for vulnerable individuals and families. 👉 To know more, visit https://lnkd.in/en_uCGjB

In We Are Mobilise land, it’s starting to feel like grand final week. Alongside Nedd Brockmann & the incredible crew from Bursty, this team here has been working relentlessly on a campaign focused on uniting Australians together towards solving homelessness. Now the calendars have switched into October, it’s all about to ignite and we couldn’t be more excited about the month ahead. 🗓️ Oct 3rd-13th: Nedd will take on the 1000 mile record, running nearly 4 marathons a day around Sydney Olympic Park track. (🤯 Yes, legitimately - keep your eyes peeled for the journey) 🗓️ Oct 13th-20th: Mobilise will be launching Unhide Homelessness, a digital media campaign focused on changing the narrative surrounding homelessness nationally. 🗓️ Oct 20th-29th: We are asking each & every Australian to join us in getting ‘uncomfortable’ to raise funds & vital awareness for those facing homelessness. (All the details on the Uncomfortable Challenge 👉 https://lnkd.in/g9ps3k-U) So what’s the vision for the funds❓ We’ve now deployed Australia’s first direct cash transfer programs, providing funding directly into the hands of those who need it which includes: Paying for single-mother families bills for an entire year, psych assessments or purchasing cars. And our Kickstarter program has already got 100+ people into housing by paying for their rent. 🏠 We aim to scale up these programs nationally now we’ve tested them in pilot form and will continue to develop new programs that plug the gaps our ever-expanding charity partner network identify. To Nedd, mate you are a person that defies belief because of your mentality. It’s a mentality to approach life with full enthusiasm, to try and make the world be a better place and a mentality to treat every person that you meet with the same respect, no matter who they are. We cannot wait to watch you soar over these next few days brother 💪 In 2022 we saw a wave of momentum, in 2024 we want a tsunami across the country. It’s time to get ‘uncomfortable’ Australia and let’s be the generation that proves that homelessness is solvable, together. So this is Team Mobilise and we look forward to making you all very proud. 💙

“If people are constantly falling off a cliff, you could place ambulances at the bottom of the cliff or build a fence on the top. We are placing far too many ambulances under the cliff.” - Denis Parsons Burkitt We spent an illuminating week at the National Housing & Homelessness Conference. The resounding sentiment is that it’s time for change and we can be the generation to develop a meaningful, coordinated solution as a sector. 3 quick takeaways: 📍 The sector is coming together for a real movement towards a national homelessness & housing plan. Up to now, organisations have worked hard in their own lanes but without a cohesive strategy it’s been hard to define progress towards our actual overarching goal together- which leads us to… 📍 The fact that homelessness is solvable. This is defined by AAEH as homelessness that is only brief, rare & non-recurring and has been seen globally. There’s regions in Canada, U.S and of course Finland that have achieved this. The greatest inhibitor to solving homelessness is the fact that we haven’t truly understood as a society that it is solvable. 📍From a We Are Mobilise perspective, it was refreshing to get an insight into where we fit in the puzzle. We truly do have unique programs that plug in really well as a complement to the other charities doing great work. We continued on conversations with prospective partners and it was amazing to hear our friends Youth Projects sharing about the success of our collaboration on Mobilise Matched, our very first direct giving program. It’s time Australia: let’s be the generation that refuses to accept #homelessness as a fact of life. #wearemobilise

Tackling Homelessness: SASC’s Investment in The Brick Charity 🏡 According to Shelter, on any given night, more than 354,000 people in England are homeless – that’s one in 160 people. The scale of the homelessness crisis is growing, and at Social and Sustainable Capital (SASC), we are committed to addressing this urgent issue by supporting charities and organisations making a real difference. One of our latest investments is in The Brick, a leading charity in Greater Manchester. Through a £1.93 million social investment loan, alongside £400k in grant funding from Access Foundation’s Cost of Living Social Investment Support Fund, The Brick will acquire 9 properties in Wigan and Leigh. This will provide 40 units of supported accommodation for individuals transitioning out of homelessness, further enhancing their existing emergency and supported provision. In 2022/2023, The Brick supported 14,483 individuals, provided 8,161 emergency bed spaces, and helped 315 people in housing crisis. With this new funding, The Brick can offer more stable housing solutions to those in need, ensuring that people have a safe space to rebuild their lives. At SASC, we are proud to support organisations like The Brick, as they continue their essential work to combat homelessness. #Homelessness #SocialInvestment #Charity #HousingSolutions #Wigan #Leigh #CostOfLiving #SocialImpact Read more here: https://lnkd.in/dK4tKr4p

We are one of 140 charities campaigning for a cross-government strategy to end youth homelessness. Read more here: https://lnkd.in/eNS8HAr6 Our Chief Exec Tracy Gollins, said: “Our Sheffield-based homeless hostel houses young women and their children from the age of 16 up to 25. We offer a secure, safe and supportive home for young people who don't have the wrap-around support of family and friends. But services like ours are few and far between. The provision for young people in cities and towns across the UK does not match the demand, and it is absolutely vital that the incoming government recognises this failure and prioritises youth homelessness with a workable and funded strategy. These young people are our future, and we can’t keep letting them down." #planforthe136k #endyouthhomelessness #signforthe136k #HomelessSupport #homelessnessprevention #SouthYorkshireCharity #domesticabusesupport #empoweringwomen #womensempowerment #womensvoices #womensstories #southyourkshire #womensadvocacy #bestkeptsecret #communityaction #communityimpact

One year ago, we launched our partnership with the national homelessness charity Crisis. Since then, colleagues in both our organisations have been working hard to raise funds, increase awareness and galvanise action. Thank you to everyone at Lloyds Banking Group who’s already raised a target-smashing £1.6 million – supporting Crisis to partner Scotland’s award-winning Homes for Good, to develop a new social enterprise lettings agency in other parts of the UK. Launching in East London, Good Place Lettings will help make renting easier, fairer and more affordable for those most in need. We’re also proud to support Crisis’ Changing Lives Programme – providing grants for education, employment and entrepreneurship. Too many people are at risk of homelessness, or being held back by the uncertainty and often inadequacy of temporary accommodation – with over 1.2 million households on waiting lists for social housing. That’s why Matt Downie MBE and I have called for; “one million more homes at social rent, within the next decade”. Lloyds may be the UK’s biggest mortgage provider, but we don’t believe that only homeowners should aspire to have somewhere secure and decent to live. There is more to be done across the housing, financial and public sectors to increase provision of good quality, genuinely affordable homes. Together with Crisis, we want to help end homelessness with homes. Read more here: https://lnkd.in/eB6ZHWNR
