As we all strive to shape a better future, it's important to take small steps towards a cleaner environment. We’re excited to officially commit to the “Taskforce on Nature-related Financial Disclosures” (TNFD) final Recommendations – launched during “New York Climate Week” – and kick off the next chapter of our sustainability journey. It’s been a privilege, as one of 40 TNFD Global Taskforce Members, to help formulate the overall framework and contribute to collective nature-positive goals. The Recommendations emphasise a scientific, location-specific and data-driven approach to assessing and prioritising an organisation’s nature-related risks and opportunities; and is a huge step in supporting the nature-positive goals of the Kunming-Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework. As we continue to integrate sustainability into every facet of our business, Swire Properties will publish its nature-related impacts, dependencies, risks and opportunities, in-line with TNFD, in its [Sustainable Development Report 2023]; and will publish its fully TNFD-aligned disclosures in its [Sustainable Development Report 2024]. Really enjoyed a positive and energising day at the Business Green Net Zero Festival #BGNZF It was great to re-connect with so many ex-colleagues and collaborators and make new connections with people doing great things in sustainability. Some takeaways from the excellent panel on ESG and finance: - Overwhelm of current initiatives and regulations risks diverting companies from the actual doing of positive act - The Corporate Sustainability DD Directive is progressing through the EU but many asset managers are lobbying hard against it, including those signed up to initiatives such as NZAMI. - Now seeing the limitations of voluntary initiatives and so need more regulation, which needs to be outcome focused. - Suggestions for mandatory climate transition plans for all financial institutions and that negative impacts, as well as positive ones, should be reported on. - Kudos to those financial institutions who have kept promoting and taking action on ESG despite the politicisation of the issue in the US and UK. A few thoughts from the insightful key note sessions: - I was really impressed, again, with Chris Skidmore MP, due to his knowledge of the issues (see the Skidmore Review), his leadership of cross-party work on net-zero, and his principled stance rather than political gamesmanship. - This is a hugely important 12 months for climate change politics, with COP28 in UAE and over 100 national elections across the globe, including in the USA and UK. - Solitaire Townsend and Farhana Yamin spoke about how the scale of the deception and delay are purposefully engineered by the large fossil fuel companies, that the discussion is being manipulated to be about how moving to NZ entails high costs and negative quality of life impacts, and that we need to keep re-focussing the narrative on the positives of a low carbon world. - Alastair Campbell said that extreme weather events have become so commonplace they don't even make the news now, such as the huge hurricane in Mexico this week, and that climate change is not just about future generations but is about all of us right now.   - On a positive, despite what some media outlets suggest and the current UK government's recent pulling back from NZ, the majority of people still support more action on climate and the recent announcements have lost voters. So lets continue pushing for and making positive change. #ESG #sustainability #climatechange

Understanding nature-related risks and impact and how you can manage those risks and impact. That’s the ambition of the Taskforce on Nature-related Financial Disclosures (TNFD), an international partnership of, among others, the United Nations and WWF, that Rabobank has been a co-developing Taskforce member of since its foundation in 2021. After two years of design and development, the group presented the framework of guidelines and sustainability recommendations to help organizations to work towards restoring nature. To mark the occasion, yesterday Petra Mannessen and Diane Boogaard on behalf of Rabobank, opened Euronext alongside WWF and other representatives of the Dutch delegation. Our goal is to integrate TNFD's recommendations into our corporate reporting. This will allow us to identify nature-related risks and the impact of our financing more effectively and drive sustainable food chains. Excellent piece in TIME, Bronson Griscom. Climate leaders are paving the way. With years, not decades to drive real action we need to give credit where credit is due - not hinder progress. "A comprehensive new study from Ecosystem Marketplace, a D.C.-based nonprofit that researches environmental markets and financing, presents evidence that those broad-brush assumptions are wrong. It was a pleasure to host a reception last night at #ClimateWeekNYC with WBCSD – World Business Council for Sustainable Development, Natural Climate Solutions Alliance and the Forest Investor Club, on investing in Natural Climate Solutions in the voluntary carbon markets.   The session was a chance for stakeholders to share experiences, concerns and opportunities in investing into this asset class and their recommendations on how to improve quality and impact. These included: -discussions linked to ensuring additional benefits beyond carbon that would deliver positive impact on nature and people -fair allocation of revenue to ensure that the profits are shared with the local communities -diligence methods including risk and legal considerations - among many more. WBSCD, Natural Climate Solutions Alliance, FIC and ERM are co-developing the NCS Investor Guide to support transparency and best practices, with the aim to give the sector greater confidence to mobilize finance and ultimately scale NCS. Investing in nature represents a key mechanism through which organizations can combine financial and sustainability imperatives. By directing capital towards projects that mitigate climate change, enhance biodiversity, promote socio-economic well-being, and recognize local communities' knowledge and integral role, organizations can help catalyze a shift towards a more sustainable world. However, how organizations invest in the right projects and ensure integration with their wider climate strategies is not straightforward.   That’s why I’m delighted to share the launch of the ‘Natural Climate Solutions for the Voluntary Carbon Market’ today as part of our #LCAW2024 program. A collective effort of our ERM Sustainability Institute, WBCSD – World Business Council for Sustainable Development, Natural Climate Solutions Alliance, and the Forest Investor Club, this important guide, designed for companies and financial institutions, illustrates not only the potential of NCS but also the critical role that private sector investment plays in unlocking this potential.   NCS projects are complex and require highly technical due diligence. However, if well-designed and managed, NCS can be a valuable addition to a natural capital investment strategy.
