Setting and enforcing global standards for a high-integrity voluntary carbon market

About us

The Integrity Council for the Voluntary Carbon Market (IC-VCM) is the new governance body which sets and enforces the highest standards of ethics, sustainability, and transparency for the global voluntary carbon market. Its purpose is to ensure the voluntary carbon market contributes to the goals of the Paris Agreement by mobilizing finance into projects and programs that reduce or remove greenhouse gas emissions in the atmosphere. This ensures the voluntary market operates for the public good – while minimizing social and environmental harms. The Integrity Council develops standards according to the world’s best available science and policy expertise, and through public consultation. The body consists of a Governing Board, an Expert Panel, and an Executive Secretariat, which is hosted by the Green Finance Institute in the United Kingdom.

  • As we head into COP16 Colombia, it’s critical to recognise the vital role Indigenous Peoples and/or local communities play in protecting the world’s most valuable ecosystems. 🤝 Indigenous lands cover 40% of the planet’s ecologically intact landscapes, and these communities continue to safeguard biodiversity even in areas where they lack formal land rights. The Integrity Council recently launched the Indigenous Peoples and/or local communities VCM Engagement Forum. This independent, self-led Forum aims to work directly with these communities to ensure their voices are heard and their rights and interests are respected in the #VoluntaryCarbonMarket, to help unlock sustainable finance that supports their livelihoods and preserves the ecosystems we all depend on. 🌐✅ To engage with us on ground at COP16, reach out to us at info@icvcm.org 🌿 #ClimateAction #IndigenousRights

  • The Integrity Council is proud to have contributed to a new practical guidance from the Work and Opportunities for Women (WOW) Programme focused on "Integrating Gender into the Design, Implementation, and Monitoring of Carbon Credit Projects."🤝 This groundbreaking guidance aims to empower project developers to incorporate gender equity throughout the lifecycle of their projects, enhancing not only the ethical impact but also the overall effectiveness and integrity of carbon credits in the #VoluntaryCarbonMarket. ✅ 🔎 Why does gender matter in carbon credit projects? Integrating gender considerations into project design and implementation is a strategic approach that can improve project outcomes, contribute to achieving multiple Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), and create more resilient and impactful carbon markets. We believe that gender-equitable carbon credits serve as a strong sustainability mechanism, enabling companies to address cross-cutting environmental, social, and governance issues while delivering meaningful benefits for women and communities. 💬 We’re excited to have collaborated with Eloise Conley, Senior Sustainability Associate, PwC UK, alongside, Social Development Direct and other leading organisations on this initiative, as a step forward in building a more inclusive and sustainable #VoluntaryCarbonMarket. 📄 Access the full guidance here: https://lnkd.in/eG5gRcXe

  • The Integrity Council for the Voluntary Carbon Market (ICVCM) Chair Annette Nazareth says: “We're delighted that Cercarbono recognises the value of high-integrity carbon credits and has applied for our science-based CCP assessment. We encourage carbon crediting programs to join us in building trust in the #VCM. By undergoing our rigorous assessment process, programs meeting our CCP criteria can use the CCP label by issuing credits under CCP-approved methodologies, a mark of excellence for high-quality carbon credits." The applications for our assessment process are closing soon. We encourage programs to step up and apply for assessment to become CCP-Eligible. ✔️ We are helping build the #VCM 2.0. • Last week, the Integrity Council joined global leaders, Indigenous Peoples, and key stakeholders to champion the role of high-integrity carbon markets in achieving global climate goals. The sessions reaffirmed a simple but critical message: the building blocks of a high-integrity, reformed voluntary carbon market (VCM) are now firmly in place. ✅ Our Voluntary Carbon Markets Day, co-hosted with VCMI and Global Carbon Market Utility showcased how carbon finance can be a powerful lever for climate action. But for the VCM to realise its full potential, we must act with speed, scale, and—above all—integrity. 🌱 Key Takeaways: 💡 Empowering Indigenous and/or local communities: Indigenous Peoples manage 40% of the world’s intact landscapes and are crucial to protecting global ecosystems. Their voices must be central to the VCM’s future. As Onel Masardule , Co-Chair of the VCM Engagement Forum, emphasised, “Their rights and traditions must be respected, and they need to be central partners in shaping the future of the VCM.” 💡 Unlocking the Power of Carbon Finance: The #VCM can channel billions into sustainable projects—protecting biodiversity, reducing emissions, and delivering social benefits. Our science-based Core Carbon Principles (CCPs) ensure that CCP-Labelled credits adhere to the highest standards and transparent mechanisms, enabling much-needed climate finance to scale. 💡 Women’s Role in Climate Action: Empowering women through carbon finance is key to sustainable development. Stella Napanu, Member of the VCM Engagement Forum, shared, “We need to put money in the hands of women who make decisions, not just treat them as beneficiaries.” Ensuring equitable access to finance will strengthen communities and enhance the long-term success of climate initiatives. 📈 The Path Forward: Integrity and transparency are the cornerstones of a thriving #VCM. Through collaboration, robust governance, and meaningful participation from all stakeholders, we can harness the full potential of carbon markets to drive climate action at the scale required. Our commitment is clear: we will continue to lead efforts to build a high-integrity, inclusive VCM that serves both people and the planet. 🌎 🔗 Read more in our blog - https://lnkd.in/exRrN3aU
