Why We Must Protect Our Freedoms on Independence Day. The 4th of July is a day to reflect, remember, celebrate and protect our freedoms. From a historical perspective, the Declaration of Independence set forth a unique ideal which has become the cornerstone value of America; enshrining our rights to Life Liberty and Pursuit of Happiness. We fought to achieve our Independence from forces without, and then from within to abolish slavery, women’s suffrage, and civil rights for all. But now we are challenged by politicians from within who seek to limit and stifle our rights to free speech by censorship and other acts. As Abraham Lincoln eloquently phrased almost 100 years after independence, it marked the beginning of "government of the people, by the people, for the people." This was not merely independence from a monarchy but the birth of a novel, democratic form of government. What an honor and privilege… During this week of Constitution Day, I was invited by Dr. Colleen Shogan, the Archivest of the United States, to give the keynote remarks at a special Naturalization Ceremony at the National Archives Museum in Washington DC. We were joined by the Honorable James E. Boasberg, Chief Judge of the United States District Court for the District of Columbia who presided over the ceremony. As a pastor and follower of Christ, what a privilege to share about God’s faithfulness, my own personal immigration journey, and the blessings, joys, and responsibilities of being an American citizen - while standing in front of the actual Declaration of Independence, Constitution, and Bill of Rights. The highlight was to witness 25 people from 24 countries who made their oaths as new naturalized citizens! It’s no secret that there are many challenges in our nation and nevertheless, it’s never lost on me that so many long to come to this country in pursuit of opportunities, freedom, and hope. Here’s a portion of what I shared: “I truly wish each of you all the best as you also pursue your hopes, seek the best for your loved ones, as you embrace the gift of freedom, and as you work diligently for your dreams…but I also hope, urge, implore…that you, me, us…would not just stop there. May we also pledge to be citizens who also care for others; May we learn to be good neighbors; to be engaged citizens who don’t just vote once every two or four years, but citizens, humans, neighbors, Americans…who daily seek the welfare, peace, and common good of our neighborhood, community, environment, cities, our country…and the larger world.” Press release: https://lnkd.in/gR24hQYK

As we celebrate this sacred day for American and international democratic legitimacy, let us reflect on the following premise for the future of democratic stability: Generations Z and Alpha are watching how we speak and act towards each other. These observations will become their behaviors and form their character. If all they witness is a society that engages in virulent language, castigating individuals with different political opinions as evil, what will their character be? What will democracy become? After all, the character of a democratic nation is the character of its citizens.
