I swear too much and am far too honest to ever be employed in corporate. It's one of the reasons why I started Radical Recruit. On a more serious note, my 'why' is so much more about what I can do, rather than what I can't. For example... At Radical, we're rewriting the script on traditional employment barriers. He was brought up in care having been removed from his unmarried Irish mother 60 odd years prior. When I met Steve, he was sleeping in his leaky car. It was the middle of winter. He explained that he had spent 30 years sleeping rough, squatting and sofa surfing with friends who enjoyed a similar lifestyle - fuelled by drugs and alcohol. He was what we in the sector would term 'entrenched in homelessness'. With over 140 convictions on his record, he'd spent 10 of those years behind bars. An addict, in and out of recovery, Steve had never worked a formal job on the books. But with our support, Steve found stability. He secured meaningful employment as a Grounds Operative in the middle of the plague after his cash in hand work dried up. After a year, we supported him to transition into an Outreach Worker role which he had wanted to do for as long as he could remember. Ironically, he would help others who were entrenched in homelessness to come off the streets and rebuild. He got clean and sober. He moved into a private rental, where he remains to this day. I suspect you've gathered by now that my work isn't just about finding people jobs. It's about empowering individuals to reclaim their dignity, confidence, and independence. It's about building stronger, more inclusive communities where everyone has the opportunity to thrive. But my teeny tiny charity can't do it alone. There is some debate about the job market in the third sector in the UK. It concerns whether organisations like charities and social enterprises struggle to find qualified staff because of a shortage of skilled job seekers. My article explores the different perspectives in this debate and offers advice for organisations struggling to recruit staff. This advice is based on my experience of looking for work in the UK.

Checkatrade Partners with Lighthouse Construction Industry Charity to Support Wellbeing in the Trade Community:  Checkatrade is proud to announce it has partnered with the Lighthouse Charity, an organisation dedicated to supporting the emotional, physical, and financial wellbeing of the construction community in the UK and Ireland. The construction sector faces significant challenges, with over a fifth of workplace illnesses related to stress, anxiety, and depression. Two construction workers take their own life every working day and these alarming statistics highlight the urgent need for increased support and resources for mental health support within the industry.
