Dr. Taylor Li received a 1-year $100,000 award from Texas Dept. of Transportation/US Dept. of Transportation for his project “Intersection Safety Challenge.”   20% traffic crashes occurred at intersections nowadays and fatalities of vulnerable road users (pedestrians, bicyclists, etc.). have reached the highest in the past 40 years. To address this issue, the US Department of Transportation (USDOT) is organizing a multi-stage Intersection Safety Challenge competition to seek disruptive solutions for increasingly severe crashes at intersections. In the first stage or Stage 1A, TxDOT adopted the LiDAR-based solution proposed by UTA and submitted the concept paper accordingly. TxDOT was later selected as one of 15 winning teams among 120 submissions by agencies to continue with the competition. Information about this competition can be found below.   This project was an award from USDOT to the winning TxDOT team and then flowed to UTA to support their activities in preparing for next steps. In this project. Dr. Li and his research team will first evaluate the performance of their proposed solution using USDOT-provided testing data sets. Then the project team will fabricate a full-scale demonstration system and deploy the proposed functions at TxDOT HQ campus in Austin and collect more data for the next stages of competitions.

News Alert: City of Aurora is investing nearly $1.4 million to expand its fiber optics network to additional parts of its water system. This move follows an accelerated fiber expansion that began in 2022. Aurora has been using National Technologies (NTI), a Network Connex Company as its fiber provider since 2018, and according to a memo from city staff, the company "has exceeded expectations" for the city. NTI conducted a fiber optic audit on the city's network, providing extensive knowledge of the infrastructure. The audit information was then added to Esri ArcMap and VETRO, Inc. software, which provides the city with a comprehensive fiber map. Feature Presentation at Infraday SE - July 18 - Nashville - www.infraday.com/se- "Using Smart Technology to Improve Work Zone Safety" - Rear end collisions due to unexpected, stopped traffic is the number one cause of Work Zone related crashes, making up over 40% of Rural Interstate and 30% of urban interstate work. As such, queue protection is the most valuable tool that DOTs have to prevent work zone related crashes along our freeways and interstates. Long duration road work along our controlled access roadways creates several scenarios that create unexpected slowed and stopped traffic. Due to the changing nature of queues, traditionally this task has been conducted by vehicles that are able to change location with traffic conditions. However, the new “Smart Technology” now allows for dynamic messaging to be displayed that reflects real time changes in traffic conditions. These systems provide numerous warnings of downstream traffic conditions which have been shown to be much more effective in reducing crashes and be done at a significant cost savings compared to traditional methods of queue protection.
