🌍 Today we celebrate International Day of Rural Women — a day to honor the strength, resilience, and contributions of women who live and work in rural communities around the world. As women in the rural sector, we've seen firsthand how women drive sustainable change in agriculture, local economies, and environmental stewardship. Women in rural areas are often the backbone of these communities, ensuring food security, preserving cultural heritage, and fostering biodiversity. We're constantly inspired by the vital role rural women play, not just in farming but also in shaping a more sustainable future. Empowering them with resources, education, and opportunities isn’t just the right thing to do — it’s essential for global development. We are proud to see organizations like the Tourist Board of the Republic of Srpska and Ministry of Agriculture of the Republic of Srpska making a real difference. Their commitment to supporting rural women ensures that female voices are uplifted, empowering them to lead sustainable practices and drive local economic development. We are proud to be a part of the #SMARTERAeu, EU-funded project which aims to empower rural communities for a sustainable transition and foster cooperation across European regions by implementing smart solutions through Smart Innovation Packages, co-created with local communities. Today, let’s recognize their invaluable work and advocate for more support, investment, and recognition for women in rural areas everywhere. November 25th is the International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women, and COREnet happily promotes this initiative by Coldiretti: “Amiche della Terra, storie di donne che nutrono il mondo” (Friends of the Soil, Stories of Women Who Nourish the World). In Italy with 200,000 women-led farms, accounting for 28% of all farms, these entrepreneurs are transforming the agri-food sector through innovation, sustainability, while raising social awareness. Shamim not only manages her farm independently but also ensures her children receive an education while contributing to the growth of her community. This year's International Rural Women's Day theme celebrates women as key drivers of sustainability, climate resilience, and community development. Shamim’s journey highlights the critical role rural women play and proves that when women thrive, communities thrive. Shamim balances her role as a mother and farmer, working independently to cultivate cotton, lentils, barley, and vegetables while also caring for her children. With Soorty’s support, she is improving her farming practices whilst providing for her family. "Those who say women can’t work are wrong," she says proudly, as she challenges societal norms and invests in her children’s education. 🌾 Happy International Day of Rural Women 🌍 Growing up in a remote village in a farming family, I witnessed from a young age the important role that rural women play in their families and communities. My mother, and grandmothers, were often in the fields working alongside their husbands to provide for us. Their contributions went beyond the farm, they made sure our family had what we needed to thrive. Across the Global South, rural women play a similar vital role in agriculture. They are often the ones planting, harvesting, and managing the day-to-day tasks that keep farms running. Yet, their efforts often go unnoticed and too often unsupported. Despite facing challenges like limited access to resources, training, and markets, they continue to adapt, innovate, and build stronger communities. On this International Day of Rural Women, it’s important to recognise the essential role these women play in feeding the world and building more sustainable agricultural systems. At CABI, we prioritise gender and social inclusion in our projects, ensuring that rural women, alongside youth and marginalised groups, are fully supported and benefit equitably.
