❗We're excited to announce the start of our new project on the "Assessment of policy options for securing inertia"! 📉 How to ensure #gridstability across the different synchronous systems in Europe during the energy transition and its increasing penetration of asynchronous wind and solar energy generation? ⏱️ #Inertia is the power system’s ability to maintain a stable electrical nominal frequency of 50 Hz using kinetic energy stored in rotating generators connected to the grid. With the transition to an increasing share of wind and solar energy generation in the electricity system and the phasing-out of conventional (synchronous) power plants, the inertial strength of power systems is declining.  📖 To address the new challenge of decreasing inertia, it is necessary to consider and implement alternative solutions to enable stable system operation with increased shares of inverter-connected renewable energy sources. The project will research the future stability challenges and inertia needs in the European electricity system, identify policy options to overcome these challenges, and assess these policy options from a societal perspective. Based on these assessments, we will provide recommendations and consult network operators, market parties and the authorities on our recommendations. 🤝 Trinomics, in collaboration with Artelys (lead) and TRACTEBEL, will conduct this study for the European Commission's DG Energy.
