The hospitality industry is one of the most dynamic and rewarding fields to work in. As the sector constantly evolves, I’ve learned that success isn’t just about the skills you bring to the table – it’s also about cultivating the characteristics and personality traits that truly make a difference. One of the most important traits to develop is adaptability. No two days are the same in this industry, and the ability to adjust quickly is essential. Whether it’s handling changing guest expectations, integrating new technologies, or managing unexpected challenges, adaptability is key to thriving in this fast-paced environment. Teamwork is also at the core of everything we do. The hospitality sector thrives on collaboration, and I’ve been fortunate to work with incredible colleagues who share the same commitment to creating exceptional experiences. Along with a strong customer focus, attention to detail, and the ability to multitask, developing these key qualities can significantly impact your career. Senior Vice President at Galaxy Entertainment Group. All posts shared do not represent my current/former employers and are my own opinions and views.
For many of us in the Hospitality industry- you must have heard about or watched "Faulty Towers” starring John Cleese, British Sitcom from the late 70’s. For anyone who has not seen a clip and you are in hospitality, please find a clip and check it out. It’s old but you will be surprised with the similarities you see in your organizations. The video below was shared on line- a Front Office employee in some hotel losing his $#!%. It’s crazy because you see more and more of these clips popping up on Social Media. I recently received one where the valet proudly using his 5 star ⭐️ pin going absolutely crazy. I truly hope these are isolated cases. What’s going wrong? ⭐️Limited options when recruiting. ⭐️Poor training ⭐️Rude Clients ⭐️Poor work environment ⭐️All of the above Have you experienced this as a leader or a guest? What can we do to change it? #customerservice101 #faultytowers #creategreatexperiences

I’m thrilled to share I’m working on a new interview series, "Enjoy Your Stay", where we delve into the magic behind Starwood Hotel's former corporate culture. Everyone I talk to who used to work at Starwood has wonderful things to say about the company. This got me thinking…what created this “cult” of employee loyalty? So I decided to reach out to some former colleagues and start investigating what was it that differentiated Starwood's culture. And I want you to follow along as I share what I've learned so we can all work together to create best-in-class workplace cultures. This week, our spotlight is on exploring the role of career advancement in driving employee loyalty. Katherine Keenan was gracious enough to share her memories and insights about working at Starwood earlier in her career. There was a theme around career development that emerged. Here are a few highlights from our conversation: 1. 🚀 Equal Playing Field: Starwood valued performance over pedigree. No invisible hierarchies—valuing all types of experience. No mandatory advanced degrees or prior hospitality experience—equal footing for all. 2. 🤝 A Culture of Sponsorship: Senior leaders and managers didn’t just mentor their teams, they sponsored them Sponsorship occurs when leaders advocated for their team members, often without them asking 3. 🌐 Valuing Rockstars: This wasn’t an “up-or-out” culture where everyone needed to get promoted every 1-2 years There was value placed on expertise and embracing subject-matter experts Check the link below in the comments for access to the full article where I expand on each of these three areas. I’ll continue to share what I find over the next few weeks and months. 📣 Want to share your experience working at Starwood with me? Send me a DM 🗣️What made Starwood's culture stand out to you?
