Today, I had the privilege of attending the Toronto Region Board of Trade annual lunch, where Mayor Olivia Chow laid out an inspiring vision for a more inclusive Toronto. Her focus on affordable housing, complete vibrant communities, and transit really hit home for me, especially considering the challenges Canada is facing right now. With the ongoing housing crisis, many people are struggling to find affordable, secure places to live. It’s encouraging to hear about the 130,000 new residences planned and 6,000 new rent-controlled homes in the pipeline. Public-private partnerships will be crucial in making this vision a reality, and I believe we all have a part to play. One of the biggest challenges is creating spaces where everyone feels they belong and are connected. In great cities, people should be able to live, work, and play without feeling isolated or disconnected. Building complete communities is essential for overcoming these challenges together. Efficient transit is another critical area. Without it, people can't access opportunities or connect with each other. Improving our transit systems will unlock tremendous opportunities and ensure that everyone can move around easily and affordably. I left the event feeling hopeful and motivated. We need to unleash the collective power of our #community to create a city where everyone feels secure and hopeful for the future. Let’s come together, take action, and build a brighter, more inclusive Toronto. What are your thoughts on these priorities? How can we contribute to this vision?

Why does your town or city exist? In many cases there will be a story of a pioneers laying down roots and the contribution of prime geographic features. A hill to see enemies approaching, the sheltered harbour for ships, the prominent position on a river that enabled trade or close proximity to a critical natural resource. Makes sense. But why does your town or city exist now? The industry has gone, our era of peace continues (well, mostly), the car saw the decline of the railway and the mines are exhausted. Why do you go to an office there still? What do you do for fun? What makes companies locate there? What attracts the tourists? Is the future bright or bleak? Is this where you and your kids will want to live in 10, 20, 50 years time? Be honest. A few years ago I got involved in something looking at the "Challenger City". These are places that reimagine who they really are rather than following the conventional norms. They're brave, embracing who they have been but not letting that define who they want to be. They tell great stories and develop connections, or even rivalries, with other cities to do better together. Cities are more than concrete jungles or sprawling suburbs. They are more than the sum of the parts. Great cities are economic drivers, cultural hubs, beacons of happiness and healthy communities. Rising costs, aging infrastructure, growing inequality and stagnant management threaten urban life today. Traditional funding is struggling to keep pace, leaving cities with ever more limited resources. Amenities are being squeezed like never before. Enter the challenger city that thrives on this adversity as an opportunity to be brave and change. It's not a new thing either. In the past many cities have risen from physical destruction to become better places. We are lucky to not live with such a threat (for now!), so we need the challenger mentality to spur us beyond the status quo without the external negative shock. To become a challenger city takes big leadership, vision, risk-taking and resilience. Also why I was delighted to find the likes of Heather Chapple and Jasmine Palardy who share that mindset in Calgary last week.

Each year, The Economist publishes a ranking of the cities with the best living conditions. In 2024, the Liveability Index saw slight improvements, despite geopolitical conflicts, civil unrest and housing crises. This is partly due to advances in healthcare and education in a number of cities in developing markets. As the following chart shows, Vienna has been crowned as the world’s most liveable city, having secured an impressive score of 98.4 points. The Austrian capital has come first three years in a row thanks to its high scores in the categories of stability, infrastructure, education and healthcare. The Danish capital of Copenhagen and the Swiss city of Zurich are the next two cities to round off the podium. Although both of the Australian cities of Sydney and Melbourne and Canada’s Vancouver remain in the top ten, all three cities have seen their infrastructure scores drop due to their respective housing crises.
