“I know there is a lot of environmental opposition, but I think it's driven by older technology. Also, I don't think people understand the consequences. In my view, having studied this area for four years, I don't believe we will hit net zero without seabed minerals. It just takes too long to get them out of the ground on land. It's also becoming increasingly expensive because the good stuff's already been mined. You're left with mineral resources that are very low-grade and very remote, which means incredibly expensive to extract.” We spoke with Oliver Gunasekara, CEO and co-founder of Impossible Metals Inc., a startup revolutionizing deep-sea mining through sustainable harvesting methods. Aerospace startup Kairos Aerospace just raised $52 million for their methane detection technology. This funding round was led by BlackRock. We hear a lot about CO2, but methane is also a concern when it comes to climate. Did you know that methane has 84 times the warming potential of CO2 over a 10 year period? ❗❗ Methane leaks from oil and gas infrastructure are a hard-to-solve issue, but Kairos is hoping to fix that. 👍 Their patented hardware and proprietary software allows them to effectively pinpoint leaks via aircraft, and advise oil and gas on where their biggest leaks are located. ✈️✈️✈️ Solutions like this have great potential to help slash emissions today. “Right now, we spend a ton of money going out there getting ocean data. It's heavily human-dependent. We launched robotic assets usually over the side. We get this data, we move on with our lives. A lot of times that data sits. The test flight of the partially hydrogen-powered aircraft sets an example for the future of zero-emission flying. The flight was voted the breakthrough technology of 2023 in a survey by MIT Technology Review: The 19-seat aircraft, powered by a hydrogen fuel cell, recently completed a 10-minute test flight. This milestone on the way to low-carbon aviation marks the longest hydrogen fuel cell-powered flight. ZeroAvia, the startup behind it, has received significant investments totaling around USD $140 million from industry giants and investors such as Bill Gates' Energy Venture Fund. KappaZeta received €480 000 investment from business angels to kick-off the development of an exciting new satellite mission to create an accurate, global, and frequently updated data set about forest biomass and carbon stock. Business angels Ahti Heinla, Prof Adam Beaumont, Markus Tamme, Mart Noorma and Anu Noorma, Priit Salumaa, Priit Vellak, Toomas Kams and Eva Kams, Tõnu Runnel and Estonian Business School Group invested in our growth. With the investment we will develop further our agricultural and defence products and create a service for forest carbon stock assessment. We will kick-off the development of an exciting new satellite mission making Sentinel-1 data three-dimensional. The mission will create an accurate, global, and frequently updated data set about forest biomass and carbon stock.
