What do we need next for road safety in the UK?

Road Safety Leadership: An Agenda for the UK Annually over 30,000 people are killed or seriously injured on the UK’s roads – the equivalent of a medium-sized UK town suffering a catastrophic burden of injury every year. Countries are encouraged by the United Nations (UN) to accelerate road safety efforts to help reduce road trauma. Unfortunately, the UK has fallen behind global best practice, largely because it has failed to implement the General Safety Regulations which applies to all new vehicles for sale in the EU from 7 July 2024. Join us on 1st July as we discuss the key policy priorities and set out an agenda for road safety action for the next UK government. TSMO in the News:  In this article from National Conference of State Legislatures, we learn that while work zones are essential for maintaining and improving transportation infrastructure, they also pose safety risks. State legislatures have introduced safety measures like speed management and tougher penalties to enhance safety. Road Safety Measures in #LMICs: Why is rich countries experience of little help in low and middle income countries? In many case, because of #Beliefs and values (closely related to #Identity and #Spirituality), which underlie #Capabilities, #Competences, #Behaviour and #Environment (ref. to Robert Dilts' #logicallevels for problem solving). Western Cartesian mindset, hence technological problem solving approach, coming from Western historical and cultural realities, have little impact on organic and systemic problems such as road safety. The new #safesystem approach (and related tools) are good steps in the right direction but still starts from #Westernbeliefs and references in terms of #roadsafety. Yet it remains very difficult if not impossible to apply in LMICs countries as it doesn't integrate the cultural, hence #Environmental, differences that exist. Starting from existing local realities - analyzed from a local perspective - then understand the #rootcauses behind these unsafe situations (up to individual and collective #Belief levels) in order to identify the relevant #criterias to be tackle by #roadsafetymeasures in order to change #Behaviours is definitely a systemic approach to will open doors to #innovativesafetymeasures (which would be of no surprise to me if they ultimately would be adapted to solve Western pending issues...). #roadsafety #roadsafetymeasures #LMIC #safesystem #standardofcivilisation #worldpolitics #internationalsocietyofstates #systemicapproach #nlpforroadsafety

Good to be back in Geneva for more UN meetings on road safety. Lots of talk about low and middle income countries and also some interesting analysis about why road safety measures from rich countries don’t always show the same effectiveness.
