Despite high levels of red and processed meats being linked to negative health outcomes like cancer, diabetes, and heart disease, alternative proteins continue to struggle to break through the public narrative and have also increasingly become the target of numerous social media attacks. Caitlin Smith, Senior Campaigner at Changing Markets explains in an op-ed published today with Green Queen Media. https://lnkd.in/eEJN9TVt
Our recent investigation, Truth, Lies, and Culture Wars, together with Ripple Research , found over 1 million examples of misinformation online, mostly on X. Misinformation spiked at key political and media moments, with the majority of misinformation focused on conspiracy theories and attacking the health benefits of alternative proteins. As elections across the world loom this year, including in the EU, the fight for the dominant narrative is heating up and misinformation is benefiting big industry who are keen to maintain the status quo.
Environmental and climate policies are increasingly under attack, as we have seen with the recent rollback on EU policymaking, and misinformation on alternative proteins have even found their way into European Council documents put forward by member states. The public and politicians must have the accurate information they need to make decisions about our health and the environment. Watch our video and read our op-ed to find out more about the kinds of misinformation to look out for and whose interests it's putting forward – it’s probably not yours.
