Safe, accessible, affordable & quality public transportation is a vital dimension of walkable communities! A core part of my media advocacy mission at Pedestrian Space is to help shape awareness about what #walkability is & the many diverse issues that contribute to walkable towns & cities. Walkability is not only about moving by foot but also acccomodating those who use different mobility devices & also provision of a functioning, quality & accessible #publictransportation system. Do you have public transportation in your community that is safe, affordable & accessible? Does your local public transportation provider have a social media page? Tag them in the comments! 📷 Photos of trams, subways, urban rapid rail & buses by Annika // Pedestrian Space

We need cities that are built for people, not cars. Transit, tree cover, intersection safety, and crosswalk availability all go into creating a walkable city. Safety and availability are often cited as key concerns with transit. What other ways can we help make cities more walkable or encourage mass transit?
Some of us on the OneSTL communications team take transit regularly - but not all of us. Transit isn't always available where we are going, or the added travel time can be too great. #DumpthePump Day on June 20 is a great time to try transit, and new transit riders can sign up for a free transit pass for the month of July here: https://lnkd.in/ghvtnzQW If you wish transit were different in your area, you can join other voices calling for change, like Citizens for Modern Transit. You can also voice your support for transit during local planning processes in your area. Did you know that many people do not have the capability to drive? So public transportation is sometimes the only option to help them get to their destination. Inter-city transit systems help us move throughout an area, regardless of the neighbourhood we live in. #publictransport #inclusivepublictransport

The Town of Orangeville is more than halfway into the first year of our two-year fare-free transit pilot and the numbers so far reveal ridership is increasing with this initiative. Last night at Orangeville Council, staff presented the ridership numbers, demonstrating the year-over-year changes since 2019. Although ridership decreased during the second-half of the pandemic, it has now more than doubled over usage in 2022. Here are the results from January to June: 2019 - 52, 815 2020 - 40,520 2021 - 39,474 2022 - 39,789 2023 - 98,648 The Town has committed to seeking ways to make Orangeville Transit more accessible and better meet the needs of our community. The fare-free transit pilot is just one of the pieces put in motion. We’re excited to soon be able to share more details about other upcoming changes including: • Shifting routes to include the Veteran’s Way Community, an area of Town that has not been able to receive transit access prior. • The new Orangeville Transit Transfer Terminal, which will be completed in the coming months. • On-demand bus services, creating more flexibility to meet the needs of residents who need access outside of regular route pick-up times.
