If you're seeing this, I'm likely in the midst of production day (Mon/Tues)! Here are 3 guideposts I've learned to make sure every production is a home run 👇 ⚡ Listen to (and empower) the client on set I used to be bad at this. Thinking I knew best 🫣 But now, I put this at the top. I'll never know someone's business better than the person IN the business. Every one of my clients gets a monitor so they can see exactly what's being recorded on the camera. And they're free to tap me on the shoulder to give me insight into how to make this video shine brighter. After all, production is, like, the biggest group project ever. 🎥 Get more shots than you think you need You don't get another chance at production day. And it feels terrible when you don't have that "one shot." I always try to get at least 2 takes of every shot & spend any extra time on additional footage (wide shots, close-ups, reactions, etc.) And the reason I have extra time is because I... 📖 Overprepare, overprepare, overprepare Anyone who knows me, like really knows me, knows organization drains me. But it's not an option when it comes to production. - Call sheets - Schedules - Shot lists - Props list - Scripts (w/ extra copies) All in a big ol' clipboard I carry with me all day. The way I see it- the more time you put into pre-production, the smoother production is. 🧠 What's something you've seen agencies do on set do that really impressed you? PS. It's production week! And I've lots of lessons to pass on. I'll be sharing a lot more tips for hosting your OWN production this week.

Unpopular Opinion: I'm okay with the phrase "Fix It in Post" Hear me out; I greatly appreciate beautifully shot, well-produced footage where all factors are properly considered upfront. Also, the phrase often carries a negative connotation that can place unnecessary strain on the post-production team – I'm not in favor of that version. However, I genuinely believe it's my role as the post-production expert to adapt and deliver the best final product that aligns with the client's vision and budget. Take this project, for instance. During the review process, we collectively learned that we couldn't display any branding for the featured vehicles. No sweat, these things happen sometimes. This posed a slight challenge since the spot was about a utility tire. But with the green light, I rolled up my sleeves and dove into “fixing it in post.” It was a great challenge and a chance to make the edit happen! It's moments like these that remind me why I love what I do. It's where creativity seamlessly meets technicality.

Budgets shouldn't limit creativity. Often, clients get excited about big, bold ideas, but then assume they're too expensive to pull off. Rather than scale back the vision, we take on the challenge: How can we make your dream concept work within your budget? If a typical US production can't affordably happen, we explore alternate routes. More filming locations, smaller crews, smart editing tricks - we rethink how to make the most visual impact possible for every dollar available. Our goal is always to empower your ideas. And this exercise uncovers new creative angles we might not have otherwise considered. The point is, don't edit the dream to fit a number. Restrictions can fuel innovation.

In the world of video production, there's a common misconception that resourcefulness is just about making do with what you have. But to me, it's so much more. It's about seeing everything - every challenge, every obstacle, every limitation - as a real opportunity to push the creative to another level. I've been in situations where the outcome looked bleak. But with a resourceful mindset, there's always a way through. It's about asking, "How can we make this better?" rather than "Can we make this work?" Dive into the video to see what I mean.
