"Dav, I need a VP of Finance that will sit in this role for the next 5 years at least, so don't find me someone too ambitious and wants to become a CFO anytime soon" "Striking the Balance: The Quest for Longevity in Leadership" In the realm of recruitment, the question often arises: Is it unrealistic for a company to seek candidates committed to a specific role's longevity, or is it a reasonable expectation? Let's explore both perspectives: 🔹 The Realistic Request: Companies often seek continuity and stability in key leadership roles. Having a candidate committed to a specific duration can ensure the pursuit of long-term strategies and sustained impact. 🔹 Balancing Ambition: On the flip side, it's essential to consider candidates' career aspirations. They may have their eyes on higher roles, which can bring fresh perspectives and energy to the organization. Finding common ground between these two viewpoints is where the magic happens. It's not about compromise, but collaboration. What are your thoughts on this delicate balancing act? 🤝💼 #TalentAcquisition #Leadership #CareerGrowth #LongTermCommitment #RecruitmentStrategies"

I was 39 when I got my first international job. I got a pretty good role as Group CFO with a global company to be based in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. Before I could relocate my family, I decided to visit the country first alone and get the feel and the vibe. I had heard 100s of contrasting views about why I shouldn't go. I booked my ticket for a 5-day trip to explore and check housing options, people, culture, lifestyle etc. A week before the travel date, my dad said, he was coming along too. Mind you, I have been an avid traveller from early childhood. I had travelled to the US, Europe and much of Asia already before this. I didn't need supervision, but still, he wanted to come. I agreed. We both travelled. I went about my business of visiting a few schools for kids and looked at a few houses. He accompanied me. Probably he wanted to spend time with me before I went away for a few years. We spent 4 days in KL, 2 days in Singapore and came back. Upon return, while I was reviewing, he subtly gave me some suggestions like • distance between school-work-home • reminded me to take additional healthcare • encouraged me to immerse in the local culture • few suggestions on cost of living and safety security He could have pinpointed right then and there, while we were exploring. He allowed me to find out all these myself. He gave me space to learn and identify. How else would I have managed to take care of myself & my family? Not only did he indirectly teach me some important relocation lessons, but a huge lesson on what good managers do. • They allow you to make mistakes • They keep an eagle-eye view of supervision • They give you a free hand to manage by yourself • and without seeking credit, they suggest ways to be Do we need better leadership lessons than that? #Leader #Manager ______________ ⤴ If you are a senior finance leader, hop on to gauravmehta.co

Chief of Staff, People Strategy, Change & Transformation, Business Management, HSBC, KPMG, Qualified Chartered Accountant
We create the map of our lives, and careers It often requires: 1. Support 2. Decisions 3. Perseverance When managing your career: ▶ The path can be set out for you, or ▶ You can do things your own way & create your own path I created my own path, full of variety and newly created roles … Having started my career as a chartered accountant, after 8 years I knew it wasn’t where I wanted to stay The aspects I loved the most were to do with people, relationships, communications and leadership … and because business is all about relationships, this really helped my career ▶ I also knew I could do more & different ▶ I didn’t want to be hemmed in to following process So, I created opportunities… The 6 roles I had after accountancy/audit were all newly created in: 1. Career Development 2. Business Management 3. Global People Strategy 4. Change & Transformation 5. COO Strategy & Planning 6. Chief of Staff to the CEO It made me realise that I can succeed in whichever role I choose to take on The key was making the right choices & taking roles I was genuinely interested in, as I performed the best at those Sometimes it’s only when you look back that: 1. You realise what you achieved 2. You realise that your decisions were your own 3. You realise that you created your own career map I created mine. How are you creating yours? What advice would you provide, or do you need? #careers #ownership #decisions
