Public sector R&D in the UK is highly concentrated in London and the South East, the most productive parts of the UK. As such, though public R&D spending is intended to support productivity growth, it is currently acting as an anti-regional policy. Crucially, there is a notable disparity in investment patterns between the public and private sectors. In the East of England and the South East, substantial public sector investments correspond to even greater private sector funding, meaning that the two sectors reinforce one another. Conversely, in London and Scotland, elevated public sector investments are not paralleled by comparable private sector funding, while in the Midlands, high private sector funding coexists with low public sector investment. This discrepancy in the allocation of resources between the public and private sectors may be hindering the potential for constructive collaboration in research and development within these regions. The Australian Government Office of Northern Australia is leading the development of a new Action Plan for Northern Australia and have released a survey inviting stakeholders from across the regions to share their thoughts on the issues and opportunities that matter most in the north. This will help shape policy and investment in Northern Australia over the next five years.  More information on the development of the Action Plan and a link to the survey is available at: Northern Australia Agenda | Department of Infrastructure, Transport, Regional Development, Communications and the Arts. The survey should take approximately 15 minutes to complete and is open until 5PM(AEST), 24 December 2023.  The survey results will inform the Northern Australia Action Plan which supports the implementation of the 2015 Our North, Our Future: White Paper on Developing Northern Australia. The White Paper is the Australian Government's 20-year framework to guide policy makers and investors in building a strong, prosperous, and resilient northern economy. Our University is part of the Northern Australia University Alliance, which is a collaborative initiative that brings together three partner universities with a shared vision for the sustainable development of Northern Australia. Our co-Founders, Mark Hepworth and Sarah Forster, joined our PBII Research Partners Jonathan Werran and Joe Fyans from Localis (think tank) for the launch of their latest report, "Design for life - the smart regeneration journey to 2030", at the UK House of Lords yesterday. Design for Life addresses the challenge facing local and national leaders of meeting the political and economic imperative to regenerate the UK's cities and towns whilst operating in a severely constrained fiscal environment. The report analyses local policy around five key, strategic concerns - place-leadership, financial capability, net zero and climate change, role of the private and third sectors, health and wellbeing - and provides recommendations for successfully carrying out place-based sustainable regeneration. Design for Life amounts to a best practice framework around which solutions for local and central government can be developed. You can read the full report below. This work has also generated valuable insights for The Good Economy's joint research programme with Localis which aims to tackle knowledge gaps in how to accelerate institutional investment for place-based economic development. Four regional innovation partnerships backed by £20m The government has awarded nearly £20m to form four research and innovation partnerships aimed at addressing regional inequality. The “Local Policy Innovation Partnerships” (LPIPs) scheme aims to drive economic growth in Wales, Scotland, Northern Ireland and Yorkshire. The LPIPs will support projects including upskilling in Northern Ireland, incorporating sustainable practices in rural business communities in Wales and Yorkshire and building opportunities around abundant natural resources in Scotland. “Harnessing the strength of our brightest and best researchers and innovators system will drive growth across the UK while strengthening our Union,” said Andrew Griffith, the science minister. “If we build on the potential of research and science clusters in the areas that need the most support, we can address local challenges and take advantage of new opportunities, ultimately creating hubs of highly skilled jobs and growth.” The partnerships are part of UK Research and Innovation (UKRI)’s goal of creating opportunities in underserved regions. The four projects will be supported by an LPIPs hub in Birmingham that will share data, evidence, learning and best practices with the government, local authorities and researchers. “Local Policy Innovation Partnerships demonstrate UKRI’s commitment to bringing together a diverse range of partners, from local and devolved government, communities and businesses,” said Prof Alison Park, head of UKRI’s creating opportunities, improving outcomes theme. “Through these long-term collaborations, we will accelerate the use of research and innovation to reduce regional inequalities and drive sustainable, inclusive growth.” #news #technews #latestnews #uknews #dailynews #dailyupdates

Our latest research paper has been published today, focused on the appraisal of the environmental impacts of new housing development. Developed in collaboration with Ministry of Housing, Communities and Local Government, and led by SQW and eftec, the study provides new guidance on the appraisal of a range of environmental impacts associated with land take, construction and the occupation of new housing. Alongside the guidance, an easy to use tool is being published to simplify the application of the guidance by users. This is the fifth paper to be published as part of a comprehensive programme of research that we’re currently undertaking, aimed at strengthening the approach to economic appraisal and the measurement of social value. Dynamic private sector experts are wanted to help ensure South West Wales becomes a more prosperous, greener and better connected region in the coming years. The Corporate Joint Committee (CJC) for South West Wales is looking for applications from specialists in sectors including transport, planning, land use, energy, business and the economy to join a new private sector advisory board. Once in place, the advisory board will provide expert guidance to members of the committee, which includes senior representatives from the Swansea Bay City Region's four local authorities, as well as the Brecon Beacons and Pembrokeshire National Park authorities. Strong experience in the identified sectors is being sought, as well as strong leadership and communication skills and a willingness to work in partnership with others. Cllr Rob Stewart, Chairman of the CJC for South West Wales, said: "South West Wales has so much potential, and the CJC is committed to ensuring we work together to create a better region in the coming years for the benefit of our residents and businesses. "Strong partnership work between the four regional councils and the two national park authorities is already in place, but we're now looking to further boost our work by setting up a private sector advisory board that will be made up of experts in the sectors we've identified. "These specialists will offer high-quality private sector insight and analysis to help guide our plans and decision-making, helping us to create more opportunities and prosperity for local people in the coming years while leaving a positive long-term legacy for generations to come."
