The European Commission has announced the results of the 2023 Marie Skłodowska-Curie Actions (#MSCA) call for Co-funding of regional, national and international programmes (COFUND), as part of the #EU’s key funding programme for research and innovation #HorizonEurope. 👏 €96.2 million are provided to fund 27 COFUND projects. These include 12 doctoral training programmes and 15 post-doctoral fellowship programmes of outstanding quality. The selected projects are coordinated by organisations in 13 countries 🇪🇸 🇫🇷 Spain and France: 6 projects each 🇮🇪 Ireland: 3 projects 🇫🇮 🇩🇰 Finland and Denmark: 2 projects each 🇨🇿 🇩🇪 🇭🇺 🇳🇱 🇵🇱 🇸🇮 🇸🇪 🇹🇷 Czechia, Germany, Hungary, the Netherlands, Poland, Slovenia, Sweden, Türkiye: 1 each Through #COFUND, organisations can create or enhance their own doctoral training and postdoctoral fellowship programmes, with the goal of recruiting researchers and attracting international talent with MSCA co-funding a significant share of their costs. Last week, Salil Sainis, former MSCA fellow and Researcher at RISE Research Institutes of Sweden, Isabel Dellacasa Lindberg, Swedish National Contact Point (NCP) Marie Skłodowska Curie Actions (#MSCA), and Erik Litborn, National Contact Point (NCP) Horizon Europe (HEU) joined us for a conversation about MSCA and #ERC opportunities in Sweden and how to best prepare your application. During our conversation, our guests shared the following resources and advise: • Check out the EURAXESS Sweden portal for open MSCA positions at Swedish universities (https://lnkd.in/e-x6r9tu). • Once you’ve identified an interesting opportunity, contact the Grants Office / Research Services at the university to ensure you have all the information needed to develop your application.  • Networking is key to success when looking for research opportunities - start early and network broadly. • MSCA grantees also have access to additional networking and learning opportunities during the fellowship period to build their professional profile. • Use your network when you’re looking for a job - the circle of researchers in Sweden, or within a particular field, is usually quite small and people are likely to be aware of opportunities within their own area of research. • The European Research Council (ERC)’s grant scheme is also a great resource for Principal Investigators and offers grants at various career levels (https://lnkd.in/deBxzyr4). • ERC projects also often hire additional researchers during the funding period, so keep an eye out for what projects have received funding and opportunities to work with those projects. • To learn more about the Swedish research funding landscape, check out EURAXESS Sweden’s overview on their website (https://lnkd.in/e9QPMwVT). Information on current calls of the Horizon Europe Programme   Horizon Europe Office in Ukraine informs you that calls are being held under the Pillar 1 of the Horizon Europe Programme "Excellent Science", within the framework of the Marie Skłodowska-Curie Action. Applications are being accepted for the "Staff Exchange" call, which promotes international, intersectoral and interdisciplinary mobility of research staff to exchange knowledge between participating organisations. The aim of the call is to provide grant support to strengthen and expand international, cross-sectoral and interdisciplinary cooperation networks, deepen networking and communication opportunities with fellow scientists and the general public, and intensify international cooperation, resulting in increased contacts and opportunities. PhDs and postdocs, this is for you. Marie Curie fellowships are hard to get. Several parameters go into drafting a successful proposal. Some of the factors, like 1. Having an impactful idea 2. A proposal that is novel, new, and state-of-the-art 3. A clear and concise research methodology 4. Having a good host and hosting institute 5. Realistic milestones and deliverables 6. Having collaborations and secondments that could help your career and several more are critically evaluated by a review panel before coming to a decision. In fact, even personalised career development plans are key sections of a proposal. Having successfully secured a Marie Curie postdoc fellowship, I have been through the process. Wait! Let me rephrase that. After failing twice and successfully securing the fellowship on my THIRD attempt, I know the grind. I know the long hours my flatmate Arup K Kunti and I spent writing our proposals back in the day. When we were in the peak stages of writing our proposal, we used to spend months just holed up in our respective rooms. We would step out for about ten minutes to take a little break every two to three hours. We would look at each other and laugh at how much we’d aged in those few hours! We’d have a cup of coffee and then get back to writing. I think the day we submitted our proposals, we must have downed two bottles of amazing South African wine from the Western Cape and not felt a thing! After what we'd been through, the wine had little effect! That was our first attempt at writing a Marie Curie proposal. Neither of us got the fellowship. But we survived. We got wiser. We now had experience! A few months ago, I participated in a podcast with Nirmal Madhavan, PhD aimed at helping Marie Curie aspirants understand the process better. We covered several factors that reviewers consider while evaluating a proposal. We covered all the aspects I listed earlier and even spoke about potential ways one could approach writing a proposal. We discussed strategies for making an idea impactful and discussed the importance of being prepared to reduce last-minute stress. This is why we do what we do on LinkedIn. We try to make your journey a little easier to navigate by preparing you ahead of time. You need to know what you’re getting into and be ready for what’s coming. We are here to help! We need much more MSCA 📢 The Marie Skłodowska-Curie Actions (MSCA) is the EU’s flagship programme for supporting doctoral and postdoctoral training through research and mobility. 🔬🌍 In a new joint statement, the European University Association (EUA) joins fellow stakeholders in calling for recognition of MSCA’s important role, alongside an increased budget to unlock its full potential. 💡 In short: ‘We need much more MSCA!’ MSCA funds high-quality, bottom-up research, enhances the career development of researchers at all stages, and supports the creation of interdisciplinary and intersectoral, global research collaborations. 🌐🤝 As such, the programme is much valued among research performing organisations, not least because it is key in supporting the next generation of researchers and creating attractive career perspectives, two priorities in the mission letter for the Commissioner-designate for Startups, #Research, and #Innovation, Ekaterina Zaharieva. ☝ It's valuable to have other PhD-students as colleagues nearby! 🔊 My experiences During the initial phase of my PhD journey, I lacked nearby PhD-student colleagues, and I felt the absence of like-minded individuals. However, I had the privilege of engaging with fellow PhD-students from various departments at Herlev and Gentofte Hospital, as well as at @ORU at Odense University Hospital. Thankfully, Merete Celano Wittenkamp has recently joined as a fellow PhD student and now occupies the office adjacent to mine at Gentofte Hospital. Have you ever been subject to science hostility? Research shows you are more likely to have been exposed to hostility than not, especially online. Astonishingly, for many, the attacks came from inside academia as often as outside. Postdoc Talk Recap: Mastering #ERCStartingGrants In our recent Postdoc Talk, Stefanie Kohl from the European Project Center (EPC) of the Technische Universität Dresden and Prof. Yana Vaynzof from TUD/IFW offered invaluable insights into securing ERC Starting Grants. Stefanie Kohl, leveraging her extensive experience at the European Project Center (EPC), provided insights into the ERC-Starting Grants application process. Complementing Stefanie Kohls's tips, Professor Yana Vaynzof brought a wealth of firsthand experience as a successful and double-time ERC grantee. Her anecdotes, strong storytelling, and strategic advice provided a great roadmap and motivation for early-career researchers and future ERC Starting Grant holders.
