With the recently adopted Warsaw Declaration and Mr Ehler’s Horizon Europe/FP10 report, discussions on the future of Horizon Europe and FP10 have further intensified, and it was essential to take stock of those recent developments. 🗨️ Efforts to keep implementation of the European Research Area (ERA) going continued this week with the publication of a second ERA policy agenda, covering the years 2025 to 2027. The agenda is a prelude to the ERA Act, due to be introduced by the European Commission in 2026, which will propose legal reinforcement for a policy previously driven by voluntary action alone. The updated policy agenda has been broadly welcomed by the research community, but most are pinning their hopes for progress on the legal force of the ERA Act. This will be “the pivotal moment when the future of the ERA is decided,” said Vincent Klein Ikkink, advisor for research at university association CESAER. Working together in Europe has never been more important! I am honored to be taking on the role of Envoy for CESAER under Denmark’s EU Presidency in Autumn 2025. This is an exciting time for European universities, given the challenges and opportunities we currently face in academia. New perspectives and innovative approaches are needed if we want to address the key challenges spelt out in the Draghi report. That is why, my work as Envoy for CESAER will aim to foster collaboration between academia, industry, and government, to help close the innovation gap and increase security. At Aalborg Universitet we believe in a mission-driven approach and robust research-based innovation environment, serving as a model for enhancing Europe’s sustainable competitiveness. Agree with Kurt, the updated draft Warsaw Declaration is a great step in the right direction! We now need strong support from all 27 EU member states for the declaration’s call for a self-standing and well-funded FP10👇
