What if every South African who could afford it donated just R5 every month to a good cause? This popped up on my timeline recently, and I thought it was just too good not to share! The High Five Fund is a local non-profit based in South Africa that enables collective giving through donors who contribute small amounts every month. The organisation has five main pillars (hence high five😉) that are presented, which donors then get to vote for. Donations get sent to the ones with the most votes. The pillars are: 💡 Social Impact 💡 Children 💡 Sports & Culture 💡 Sustainability 💡 Animal Welfare Their motto is: Together, small contributions create substantial impact and foster community-driven philanthropy for positive change. I really can’t explain how much this organisation stuck out to me. The CAF #WorldGivingIndex 2023 paints a mixed picture of the UK's generosity. We can take pride in our position as the 3rd most generous country for donating money, but overall the UK has slipped down the Index over the last decade. The UK’s ranks 58th in the world for volunteering and 112th for helping strangers, highlighting the need to build a more holistic culture of giving. Governments, funders, and civil society organisations all have unique roles to play. We can take inspiration from other countries, and we are calling on the Government to take a lead by introducing a national strategy for philanthropy and charitable giving. Community perceptions of charities and community groups are shifting. That will require a reset in some of our thinking to find a new North. Community Council for Australia CEO David Crosbie delves into an absolute must read for #charities and #communitygroups: The Community Compass. In this article for the Community Advocate he discusses four of the many issues that arose for him when reviewing the findings: indifference; volunteering; our shifting values; and community views on purpose.
