🌍 Did you know? 🌪️ Climate Risk and Disaster Finance helps communities prepare for, respond to, and recover from climate-related disasters. It involves: • 🚨Building resilience to climate impacts • ☂️Offering insurance against natural disasters • 🚀Providing rapid financial relief post-disaster As part of ongoing climate change mitigation and adaptation efforts, Global Shield against Climate Risks focuses on managing residual risks by providing better access to pre-arranged financial solutions. But it doesn’t stop there! Global Shield also identifies anticipatory actions to reduce human and economic losses, and develops effective channels to provide rapid support to the most vulnerable—especially women, children, and marginalized groups, who are often the hardest hit by climate events. Since the launch of the Global Shield at COP27, France and Agence Française de Développement - AFD - dans l'océan Pacifique has pledged to support the initiative and we continue supporting the national dialogues and the response to the needs of countries. #ClimateFinance #Resilience #GlobalShield #SustainableDevelopment #DisasterRelief AFD - Agence Française de Développement Virginie Bleitrach Céline BOULAY Hugo Lecué Audrey Brulé - Françoise Prashant Chandra Ministry of Finance, Strategic Planning, National Development and Statistics, Fiji Expertise France Pacific Catastrophe Risk Insurance Company (PCRIC) Laurence Brattin-Nerrière François-Xavier Léger
🛡️ Last week, Suva hosted the inaugural #GlobalShield workshop in the Pacific to strengthen financial resilience against climate and disaster risks in the small island state. Here's what was achieved: 📊 Conducted a preliminary stocktake of Fiji's existing CDRFI landscape 🔎 Identified critical financial protection gaps ℹ Held a capacity building session on Climate and Disaster Risk Management Diverse stakeholders gained invaluable insights into the Global Shield initiative, its In-Country Process, and the array of support options available through the Global Shield Financing Structure. What's next 👉 The Ministry of Finance, Strategic Planning, National Development and Statistics, Fiji will lead the finalisation of the stocktake and gap analysis, paving the way for a tailored request for support to the Global Shield. Before I joined CelsiusPro/Global Parametrics last year, I was already thinking that the Natural Disaster Fund is a bit of a hidden champion among the structures that were created under the InsuResilience Global Partnership and next to the Global Shield. After working with it for almost a year, I am pretty convinced that the NDF is ready to play a much more central role in addressing the protection gap of climate-vulnerable communities. As a donor-backed risk transfer vehicle, the NDF closes an important gap in parametric insurance value chains in the Global South. The Fund is highly complementary to the Global Shield against Climate Risks and other initiatives that focus on financing insurance and risk transfer projects. It can offer risk capacity (and TA) to risk pools, development insurers, humanitarians, parametric insurance pilots, basically any aggregator of climate risks. With its global portfolio, it already paid out to millions of people in response to the Morocco Earthquake, Hurricane Otis, droughts in African countries amongst other events. Find out about the fund, the impact it had in 2023 and our work in the new Impact Report. (disclaimer, I am aware of the discourse around the term "natural disaster", the name of the fund does not necessarily reflect my opinions in that debate)
In 2023, the Natural Disaster Fund (NDF) contributed to strengthening the climate resilience of 35.7 million vulnerable people. Managed by our Global Parametrics team, the NDF is a public-private partnership funded by UK and German governmental entities. The NDF shares risks with Hannover Re to provide risk capacity for parametric solutions that foster climate and NatCat resilience for poor and vulnerable communities in low-and-middle-income countries across the Global South. Download the full report (👉 https://shorturl.at/CjqxQ) to learn how the work of NDF and its partners has benefited communities across 71 countries. In Somalia, clan conflicts often stem from competition over natural resources. These conflicts, fueled by scarce resources and environmental stress, have profound impacts on community stability and development. It's time to explore innovative solutions that address these root causes and foster lasting peace. Environmental Peacebuilding is emerging as a transformative approach to conflict prevention and resolution. By integrating natural resource management with peacebuilding efforts, we can create pathways to sustainable harmony and resilience.

It was a pleasure moderating the panel "Building Collaborative Muscle Across Sectors in Emergency Management Implementation" today at the Canadian Emergency Preparedness and Climate Adaptation Convention in Ottawa. Thanks to Josh Bowen, Eustace (Sam) Roberts, Nick Sealy-Thompson MA MBA MCGI MInstRE MGPP and #JasonWigton for sharing their insights and experiences. Takeaways included: ➡ Establishing relationships at the local level is critical. Know the people in your networks and bring them together. ➡ Initiating contractual arrangements with the private sector that are well-written and offer longer-term support for goods and services will establish better partnerships. ➡ Build on your community's resilience. Make the education and programs resonate. Give people focus and purpose, and you will be better prepared to face your next disaster together. ➡ Start planning today for tomorrow's crisis because if you wait - it will be too late, and you will undoubtedly fail. #CEPCA #EmergencyManagement #PublicPrivatePartnerships #FEMA #IAEM #IAEMCanadaCouncil #TeamRubicon #ATCO #IndigenousEM

🌍💧 This week, CEOs of the Water, Peace & Security (WPS) Partnership — IHE Delft Institute for Water Education, Deltares, HCSS - The Hague Centre for Strategic Studies, World Resources Institute, International Alert, and Wetlands International — met to reiterate their commitment to the partnership. Eddy Moors, Rector at IHE Delft, said: "It is becoming increasingly clear that the climate and water challenges we face are making the work of the WPS partnership invaluable. Together, we strive to turn cycles of water-related conflict into cycles of cooperation on water, through dialogue, training, and awareness." The Water, Peace and Security (WPS) Partnership uses advanced technology to address the global water crisis and its impact on communities, ecosystems, and security. Founded in 2018, WPS creates tools that assist in identifying and mitigating water-related security risks. By fostering awareness and understanding, we support proactive measures in vulnerable regions like Mali, Iraq, Ethiopia, and Kenya. Our efforts aim to not only prevent water tension from escalating into conflict but also to transform water challenges into collaborative peacebuilding opportunities.
