Today is World Water Day with the theme "Leveraging Water for Peace" 🕊️ Did you know? 🌍 2.2 billion still live without safely managed drinking water, including 115 million people who drink surface water. 🌍 Roughly half of the world’s population is experiencing severe water scarcity for at least part of the year 🌍 More than 3 billion people worldwide depend on water that crosses national borders. Yet, out of 153 countries that share rivers, lakes and aquifers with their neighbours, only 24 countries report having cooperation agreements for all their shared water. Peaceful cooperation around water can lead to peaceful cooperation in all sectors. By working together to balance everyone’s human rights and needs, water can be a stabilising force and a catalyst for sustainable development. Ultimately, water can be a catalyst for peace at all governance levels. 💧Water can bring together different water users or ‘rightsholders’ – often from different ethnicities or religious groups – around a common cause and provide an entry point for dialogue, reconciliation and peacebuilding. 💧Cooperation over shared water resources and ‘hydrodiplomacy’ can be a starting point for communication and broader cooperation, going beyond water resources. 💧In post-conflict situations, water cooperation plays a pivotal role in rebuilding trust and fostering long-term stability, offering a tangible foundation for collaboration and mutual understanding. Memories talks! A retrospective from the participation in the cycle of IPA EUROPEAN UNION COOPERATION IN THE FIELD OF CIVIL PROTECTION 2010-2012, where with dedication and zeal we were part of the process of raising and developing regional capacities to face the unexpected and misfortunes. The support provided by the European Civil Protection Mechanism was a unique example of joint efforts for the countries of the Western Balkans and Turkey, with the main objective of Capacity building and development ,harmonizing procedures and protocols for mutual aid to the country hit by a disaster. As long as the disaster from nature and the human factor, in principle, does not know administrative, ethnic, political borders, or anything else, efforts must continue in the spirit and well-known principles. Above all, the preparation for the challenges from climate change, as well as based on the commitments of the Sendai Framework 2015-2030, which are the obligation of each country, organization and community, the implementation would be unconditional inspiration for all of us. From this context, my participation from the very beginning of the IPA program until today inspires me and obliges to continue with contribution based on known principles in providing help where and how often it will be needed to communities affected by disasters.

On this year's World Water Day with #WaterForPeace at its core, the main question is if water is a stream of peace or a source of conflict in society? 🌍 In a #WorldWaterDay Op-Ed, Kingdom of the Netherlands Ambassador to Kenya Maarten Brouwer asks exactly this question about the nature of competition over water resources in Kenya. Trying to solve issues over water use by different regional and local stakeholders asks for good governance to limit the risk of conflict over water. Such is the case around Lake Turkana in northern Kenya.   💪🏽To assist in providing good governance in the Turkana area, the #WaterPeaceandSecurityPartnership, supported by IGG, helps in providing an integrated approach in predicting and mitigating water-based issues and conflict. The partnership, a collaboration between IHE Delft Institute for Water Education, Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ) GmbH, World Resources Institute,HCSS - The Hague Centre for Strategic Studies, Wetlands International, Deltares Water, Peace & Security and International Alert collaborates with the Turkana government to help prevent water conflict. The partnership uses data monitoring, traditional approaches as well as a stimulating dialogue to foster sustainable water management and cooperation. 🌐 Good governance as prerequisite for preventing water conflicts is also the main take-away for the United Nations 2024 World Water Development Report (WWDR), launched today. The United Nations General Assembly adopted a draft resolution on holding a High-Level meeting addressing the existential threats posed by sea-level rise on the sidelines of #UNGA79 General Debate. I thank all Member States for their valued support in prioritizing this urgent issue and also for prioritizing the urgent need to address the existential threats posed by sea-level rise, ranging from irrecoverable loss of ancestral lands, as well as the loss of the rich culture and heritage, not to mention the lasting destabilization of livelihoods. I, therefore, look forward to open, transparent, and inclusive consultations in the General Assembly towards finalizing the organizational arrangements and modalities of the proposed 25 September high-level plenary meeting. This meeting will be exceptionally held on the sidelines of the General Debate of the seventy-ninth session of the Assembly. I am confident that, together, we can chart a path toward an action-oriented outcome that would prevent, protect, and resolve the untenable situations arising out of sea level rise. https://lnkd.in/g3p-wEzk

🌊 Caribbean #SIDS face frequent and extreme weather events impacting lives and livelihoods, especially of the nearly 22 million people who live less than six meters above sea level. A Coalition for Disaster Resilient Infrastructure funded #resilientinfrastructure #IRIS project in the #DominicanRepublic, #Cuba and #Haiti will strengthen capacity and enhance #resilience of critical infrastructure, ensuring community #resilience. Today #1954HagueConvention turns 70! #ProcultherNet joins the celebrations, meet us in The Hague on 14 and 15 May at the Networking Agora parallel to the UNESCO Conference “Cultural Heritage and Peace: Building on 70 years of UNESCO Hague Convention for the Protection of Cultural Property in the Event of Armed Conflict”. We are sharing the knowledge and tools developed within #Proculther(2019-2021) and #ProcultherNet (2022-2023) and unveil the forthcoming actions foreseen within the current initiative PROCULTHER-NET 2 (2024-2025). How can water trigger war? How can water be driver of 🕊️peace? And what can we do to prevent water-related conflicts in the future? Freshwater supplies worldwide are shrinking, while demand for water is greater than ever, resulting in a growing number of conflicts centering on its availability and distribution. That is why the theme of this #WorldWaterDay is the role of water in peace and conflict. 📽️In this video, Director-General Water & Soil Jaap Slootmaker of the Ministry of Infrastructure and Water tells us about his visit to the UN to support the NL efforts in making water a driver of peace and following up on the #UN2023WaterConference, hosted by the Kingdom of the Netherlands and the Republic of Tajikistan. 🤝🏽The most effective ways to resolve or prevent water-related conflicts are cooperation and agreements on water management distribution. The Netherlands has a great deal of knowledge on and expertise in this area, which can benefit other countries. #Waterdiplomacy is central to this approach. This involves addressing issues relating to managing and distributing water and agreeing solutions with all water users – from countries to businesses and knowledge institutions. 🚰The increasing pressure on freshwater supplies doesn’t necessarily have to lead to new conflicts. By working together, making agreements and managing water better, it is possible not only to prevent conflicts but also to contribute to development and greater prosperity.
