Honored to be invited to speak at the Pakistan Pavilion at COP28 UAE Blue Zone on gender responsive climate action. Here is what activists from Gambia, Indonesia, Bangladesh and Pakistan have to say: 1️⃣ You cannot expect your climate action to impact women positively, until your action delivery team includes women. Atleast 50% of all delivery teams must be women. 2️⃣ Capacity building of young women should be done through professional experience; climate organizations can and SHOULD have outreach programs in universities of their operational regions with a quota for female interns. These internships should be PAID to ensure that all socio-economic classes can take part. 3️⃣ Gender inclusion is not just a concern of women. Our male co-panelist Rijve Arefin proved that through his active advocacy for women's rights in Bangladesh. ALL PEOPLE can and should be gender advocates. Gender inclusion in climate action is not a static achievement. It is an ongoing journey. (You can apply in French, English, Spanish, or Arabic by clicking the link you find at the bottom of this page) The Gender Just Climate Solutions Awards are granted every year to grassroots, community groups and non-governmental organizations tackling the climate emergency while advancing gender equality. These solutions are leading community solutions and system-changing climate action that bring multiple social and environmental improvements. They contribute to raising the ambition to achieve the 1.5-degree target by 2030. Three winners are selected by a diverse group of jury members from the WGC following an open and transparent process and are announced during an official, high-level ceremony at the United Nations Climate Change Conference (COP). Winning solutions are showcased across three different project categories: Technical – gender-responsive climate solutions focusing on technologies, i.e. water, RE, food production or transformation, digitalization, waste reduction etc. Non-technical – gender-responsive climate solutions focusing on behavioral change, mutual learning, skills sharing, capacity strengthening etc. Transformational – gender-responsive climate solutions focusing on addressing governance, institutional / societal change etc. Each winner receives a €5000 monetary award, a chance to attend COP29, which will be held in Baku, Azerbaijan, fully covered travel, and enter WECF’s long-term mentoring programme which supports them in strengthening and upscaling their leading solutions. Up to 20 nominees’ projects are presented in the Awards publication, on our online platforms, and at the Awards Ceremony during the COP. Private Sector partnerships can attract finance for climate resilience. #COP28 presents another opportunity for the Arab region to leverage partnerships and share lessons learned and best practices on how the private sector can get more engaged with climate action in the region. The Swedish Delegation at COP28 will host an event on December 10 focusing on sharing good practices and lessons learned in mobilising climate finance and related strategies in the Arab region. The event will bring together leading private sector actors, policymakers, and international organisations to explore how the private sector can get more engaged in the topic. It will also seek to motivate long-term cooperation aiming to have impact and co-benefits for goals of poverty, gender equality, food, water and energy security, and climate-resilient development pathways. During the #ANCA Annual Summit 2024, I reminisced on the carefree days spent swimming in the now vanished rivers. Yet, beyond personal memories, the loss that is with us emerges as a reality: nearly 30% of Africa grapples with water scarcity. Stress tests presented by FSD Africa at the summit highlighted the profound impacts of climate change on both investment viability and biodiversity. Presenters stressed the urgency of a unified sustainability agenda.In my view, collaboration under the banner of 'leave no person behind' is paramount to reduce the societal backlash as witnessed in parts of Europe. Moreover, addressing gender inequality, inequality in all forms, and improving education standards are the achilles toward a sustainable future. #ANCASUMMIT2024.

[Youth-Led Digital Innovations for Sustainable Development and Climate Action in Asia and the Pacific] This event is part of the United Nations ESCAP 80th Commission Session. Scheduled for April 23, 2024, , it took place both in-person at the United Nations Conference Centre Bangkok and online via Zoom. This event was several UN agencies and featured discussions on the role of youth in digital innovation for sustainable development and climate action, including how to close digital divides and enhance government support for youth-led initiatives. In the midst of the critical discussions at #cop28, a profound focus on empowering #indigenouspeoples and communities has emerged as a pivotal aspect of enhancing adaptive capacity and #resiliencebuilding. Recognizing the unique challenges faced by these communities, which are often disproportionately affected by the impacts of #climatechange, initiatives need to be championed to amplify their voices and integrate their #traditionalknowledge into climate adaptation strategies. The rich cultural diversity, coupled with a deep understanding of local #ecosystems positions indigenous communities as vital contributors to #sustainable solutions. By fostering #partnerships that prioritize community-led initiatives, #Africa can pave the way for inclusive and effective climate action. What will the "Pact for the Future" bring? 🔮 The United Nations adopted the Pact for the Future within the framework of the Summit of the Future. This Pact is an ambitious global initiative aimed at strengthening international cooperation and addressing key global challenges: 🌐 Strengthened Multilateralism: Global issues like hunger, climate change, and conflicts cannot be solved by countries acting in isolation. 🌪️ Enhanced Climate Action: Stronger commitments are needed to reduce carbon emissions, protect biodiversity, and ensure that the global warming targets set by the Paris Agreement are met or exceeded. Additionally, climate adaptation strategies are crucial, especially for vulnerable countries. 🎯 Focus on Sustainable Development Goals: Many countries are off track to meet the 2030 goals, which include ending hunger and poverty, promoting gender equality, and providing clean water and sanitation. The Pact could help accelerate progress toward achieving the SDGs. 🕊️ Global Peace and Conflict Prevention: With rising geopolitical tensions and conflicts, the emphasis on peacebuilding and conflict prevention is more relevant than ever. 🤝 Human Rights and Inclusion: The protection of human rights, the promotion of gender equality, and the inclusion of marginalized groups are essential for overcoming current global challenges. 🗨️ Our Secretary General Mathias Mogge is following the UN Summit of the Future in New York: "We really hope that this Pact for the Future is another strong starting point to bring the international community together." As an advocate for integration , it's worth highlighting how climate change , conflict and gender are inextricably linked , how they interact in complex ways and how they are different aspects of the same broader issue of vulnerability. Climate Change can exacerbate risks to peace and security, while insecurity can make adapting to climate-related impacts more challenging especially to the most vulnerable like women and children. So how does gender impact vulnerability to climate related security risks ? This is where a gender-sensitive climate security analysis is required , it first stems from a point of understanding gender in terms of its broadest implications and meaningful intersectional engagement. An example of a gendered impact of climate change is how young men who are pastoralists , join armed groups due the pressure brought by masculine norms of affording bride price , which is made almost impossible by the climate adversity which affects their livelihoods and income. Hence, there is an urgent need for applying an integrated analysis and lens to assess the compound climate-related security risks , which will help to design targeted solutions that leverage the skills and capacities of different groups. The entry points for integrated action exists through policy, planning and programming in the areas of climate adaptation & mitigation , peace and development.
