Our next article from Volume 72, Issue 1 is "The United States and the Need for an Improved Global Citizenship in the Twenty-First Century: How History Shaped our Identity as a Nation," by Karin Mika. This Article describes how accidents of geography and history turned the United States into a global power. It examines how the warring in Europe during the eighteenth and nineteenth century allowed the United States to develop without continually rebuilding. The Article explores how the United States’ isolation enabled it to develop continuity in its initially experimental political system. These factors enabled the United States to be in the position dominance during and after the Second World War. This Article argues that the United States now feel a sense of superiority that is more “God given” than earned. Most are unfamiliar with the history that led to the United States becoming a world leader, thus feeling superior to other countries. This Article concludes that a cultural shift in the United States is needed that recognizes the need for global citizenship, or the United States faces deterioration as a global power.

New Release: The Global Ties U.S. Community Impact Study is the first of its kind to measure the domestic impacts of exchanges like the U.S. Department of State International Visitor Leadership Program (IVLP) on U.S. communities and citizens here at home.   The study found that participating in #InternationalExchange programs like #IVLP increases skills and resources that help U.S. community members thrive in a globalized economy, while simultaneously encouraging them to engage more deeply in their own local communities. More than 75% of respondents reported gains in global knowledge, civic engagement, and professional reputation.   Said our own Katherine Brown: "With this data, we're excited to provide a deeper look at why exchanges matter economically and socio-culturally for U.S. communities. I couldn't be more excited for Kristina Biyad on the launch of her timely, groundbreaking report for the Intermestic Policy Initiative (an undertaking of the Foreign Policy for America Foundation), "Local Perspectives on U.S. Foreign Policy." Reflecting on the listening sessions and roundtable conversations that she held with local leaders in Atlanta, Chicago, Dallas, Detroit, and Miami, she observes that "the decisions made in distant capitals reverberate within local communities, shaping the very fabric of their existence. We believe that foreign policy should not be an abstract exercise but a collaborative endeavor that acknowledges the interdependencies between local communities, regions, and the broader global landscape." Videos and analyses like this recap by the CFR demonstrate how much one can miss when developing predictions and solutions or navigating issues at the international level simply because the unrelenting pace of events across a global range of subjects exceeds the bandwidth of anyone without a full-time research team. Looking ahead to 2024 and thinking about the impact of decision-makers, it will be imperative for leaders in every sector to maintain 360° awareness of trends and events shaping the world while also persevering through the urge to disconnect in an effort to escape the cognitive overload of repeated crises. I offer this: develop simple frameworks to track the health of our most fundamental institutions and values. Process major events in the coming year using simple questions that reveal their causal trajectory. (You don’t have to do a deep dive into every event. It’s sufficient to ask questions like “does this event impact democracy/ human freedom positively or negatively?” Moreover, keeping the questions simple will help fight apathy that stems from being overwhelmed by too much data on events outside of your control. Organize the identified trends within your framework to keep a “running count” and intuitive awareness of the health of our key institutions, industries, norms, and values. This type of global awareness benefits a leader’s ability to more accurately identify and understand the driving forces behind issues in their domain of expertise and preempt them more effectively.

In this latest co-authored piece published by the Institute for Indo-Pacific Affairs, Professor Alexander C. Tan and I argue that a confident and self-assured America, knowing that it is not in decline due to the current rules-based order, will be better positioned to interact with the region and wield more influence in the region compared to a scenario where it pressures Indo-Pacific states to pick sides between the US and China.

Interesting read. As a researcher and someone who works in #climate justice, I use the term ‘global south’ almost just as much as I use the term ‘global north’. For some reason, both these terms don’t roll off the tongue so easily, as they both feel rather divisive and inaccurate in depicting geographic reality. The way I rationalize it is by broadly thinking in colonial terms, i.e., global south countries are those that have been at some point colonized or exploited by countries of the global north, where south and north in this case are not necessarily related to actual geography, borders, and equator lines.
