The most effective ideas are more likely to lead to societal cohesion, justice, security and prosperity for all, thereby laying the foundations for national and international stability. We welcome the recent White Paper commitment to supporting open societies and human rights as a critical contribution to achieving the Sustainable Development Goals by 2030- and the UK’s aid priorities of ending extreme poverty and addressing the climate crisis. This article by my CEO explains why.

In Copenhagen where I was invited to speak at the Democracy Summit Alliance of Democracies Foundation. Looking at the fundamental priorities at EU level in the years to come, I see three main areas: - Our common democratic values - Strengthening our economic base - Investing more in defence and security #CDS2024

There is an opportunity for fulfilling obligations when those who abuse their power and trust are held accountable. What's the penalty for the abuse of power by the nations whose action threatens world peace and is responsible for the loss of lives and suffering of millions of people? Here, I am more precisely asking about the United States of America using its veto to allow a genocide of 2.3 million people to continue—that too against the 153 countries that want to stop the genocide. If the action of the U.S. is not in line with the purpose and objectives of the UN charter, what actions can be taken to ensure that the U.S. is held accountable for its abuse of power and trust? If no action can be taken, is this system effective in governing world affairs?

The Global Policy Center (GPC), in collaboration with the Jacques Delors Institute & Sciences Po, has published a new policy brief on the European Political Community: ‘The European Political Community: Navigating the Path to Consolidation’.    In this brief, Sébastien Maillard and I put forward a series of policy recommendations to help consolidate this continental level security platform. The following are the key points:   1) The European Political Community (EPC) is at a crossroad, needing to solidify its role as a platform for strategic dialogue and security cooperation in Europe while delivering concrete results. 2) Despite facing challenges such as varying priorities and lacking political will, the EPC has demonstrated its potential to foster "strategic intimacy" among European leaders. 3) The EPC must prioritize and focus on continental-level security discussions, especially as the war in Ukraine persists and becomes increasingly concerning for Europe. 4) While flexibility remains its key asset, introducing a degree of institutionalization by appointing designated sherpas can help ensure ownership of the EPC’s agenda, priorities, and deliverables, enhancing its effectiveness and ensuring tangible outcomes from its summits. 5) The EU and non-EU countries should develop a common understanding of how to utilize the EPC to support the advancement of EU candidate countries, particularly in foreign and security policy coordination, with a focus on aiding Ukraine. 6) The forthcoming Summit presents an opportunity to reaffirm the United Kingdom's role in European security and potentially reengage with Turkey more effectively. It is also a chance to consolidate the EPC initiative, select new hosts for 2025, and leverage the platform for the continent's benefit. The last few years of all of our lives were overflowing with crises, from the global pandemic to the escalation of conflict and war. In such challenging circumstances, a dialogue on democracy is essential to find new solutions and act against new threats.   Council of Europe #WorldForumforDemocracy is one of Europe's largest platforms for these conversations, and I was honored to give my two cents on the "Learning to Wage Democracy in Peace" panel. I've used the opportunity of speaking at this panel to share my thoughts on the influence of foreign malign actors on the development of democracy and democratic capacity building, a short excerpt of which is posted below.

During the first Summit for Democracy in December 2021, President Biden launched The Presidential Initiative for Democratic Renewal (PIDR), a whole of U.S. Government landmark set of policy and foreign assistance initiatives that modernize and multilateralize U.S. efforts to bolster democracy and defend human rights globally. PIDR focuses on catalyzing, diversifying, and sustaining global partnerships and expanding programming to defend democracies from complex, as well as emerging challenges. It also represents a significant, targeted expansion of the U.S. Government efforts to defend, sustain, and grow democratic resilience with likeminded governmental and non-governmental partners. https://lnkd.in/gwa87WrM

Yesterday, the Atlantic Council's Freedom and Prosperity Center launched the 2024 Freedom and Prosperity Indexes, offering an analysis of how global conflict, democratic backsliding, and rising authoritarianism are impacting the world. IO's Principal DAS David McFarland highlighted the many ways our bureau is working within the multilateral system to defend democratic values and advance #prosperity through implementation of the #SDGs. #FPIndexes24

It will take years to recover from this disaster.
