Dad, writer, author of Brokedown Sensei, coach, frmr owner OMNI MMA, BJJ/Judo/JJJ black belt, self-defense expert, mental health advocate, speaker, former World masters Jiu Jitsu champion.
Performing judo throws for BJJ requires less rotation to ensure landing in a strong top position. We often put in more energy than necessary to accomplish a task that would be better served if we pulled back a little. Whether it's over rotating in a throw, overtraining, or overworking, more is not always better. #balance #judo #bjj #dropseionage #jiujitsu #brazilianjiujitsu #takedown #internaljiujitsu

Such an inspiring approach to inclusion and adaptive services. Love the use of the founding philosophy of Judo as not just a martial arts mentality but a community and respect towards all mentality. #inclusion #judo #disabilities https://lnkd.in/gx_SkmXY

Tokyo 2020 Paralympic Champion 🥇 Paris 2024 Bronze Medalist 🥉 Former World No.1 Judoka (+90 and -100)
As some of you may have seen I recently competed in a sighted competition in Belgium. I don’t think many people realise that the majority of my training is against sighted athletes anyway, but I sometimes add a sighted competition into my schedule. Embracing the challenge of competing against sighted fighters in judo has been a transformative aspect of my journey within the sport of Judo. Each fight against sighted opponents becomes a dynamic challenge, a test of both my technical skills and adaptability. The thrill of facing opponents with full vision, not only intensifies the competition but also propels my growth as a judoka. The only rule difference between the two categories, wherein visually impaired fighters start the fight on the grip, sighted fighters begin across the mat from each other a few feet apart. Beginning on the grip as a starting position, not only requires precision in grip strength but also demands swift and strategic decision-making, enhancing my ability to read and respond effectively to the unpredictable movements of my opponent. Navigating through the challenges posed by sighted fighters is helping me everyday by moulding me into a more versatile and resilient judoka. Confronting these challenges head-on contributes to my overall development, mindset that embraces adversity and is a stepping stone for advancement within the dynamic world of competitive judo. #paralympicjudo #adaptivemindset #constantlyworking #britishjudo

DID YOU KNOW? The objective of judo is to throw your opponent to the ground, immobilise them with a pinning hold or force them into submission with a joint lock or choke. There are two types of scores in judo: An ippon is awarded when an athlete throws his opponent to the mat on his or her back with strength, speed and control. An ippon can also be awarded through submission or by pinning an opponent to the ground for 20 seconds. If a judoka achieves ippon, they immediately win the match. A waza-ari is awarded for a throw that isn’t clear enough to be an ippon (either because it lacked speed or force, or the opponent did not land primarily on their back) or when an opponent is pinned down for less than 20 seconds (but longer than 10 seconds). Two waza‑ari in one match is the equivalent of an ippon and immediately ends the match. #BidvestsupportsteamSA #Bidvestoperationexcellence

Judo, as a sport, embodies the ideals highlighted by the United Nations. By its very nature, judo is about participation. It is about inclusion and citizenship. Judo brings individuals and communities together, highlighting commonalities and bridging cultural or ethnic divides. Judo provides a forum to learn skills such as discipline, confidence, and leadership and teaches core principles such as tolerance, cooperation, and respect. Judo teaches the value of effort and how to manage victory as well as defeat. When these positive aspects of judo are emphasised, judo becomes a powerful vehicle through which the United Nations can work towards achieving its goals. In the text, we have substituted judo for the word sport that the UN used. Source: United Nations Inter-Agency, Hartmann, D.; Kwauk, C. (2011). GTNANO(R) - NANOCOMPOSITE MATERIALS FOR EXTREME ENVIRONMENTS | SHIELDING | THERMAL PROTECTION | HYPERSONICS | SPACE OPTICS
Judo techniques are generally intended to turn an opponent’s force to one’s own advantage rather than to oppose it directly. Well here’s a nice mental/emotional/spiritual judo move you can do: instead of trying to oppose or escape your pain leverage it instead. In fact, make it seem even worse than it is. Actually drive it to “ breaking threshold”.
