As an academic medical center, University Health KC (UH) is proud to collaborate with local high schools and expose students to exciting career opportunities in healthcare. The UH Pharmacy Team recently partnered with Ruskin High School (Hickman Mills C-1 School District) to work with Anatomy and Physiology students on projects such as pharmacy careers. When asked about the experience, Director of Ambulatory Pharmacy Kristi Stice said, “I was so impressed by the quality of the students’ work and the effort they put into their projects. “These young people showed such professionalism presenting on challenging topics. It was such a pleasure to work with them.”

A new AAMC data snapshot explores themes and perspectives among medical school faculty on institutional diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) efforts and highlights specific actions for leaders to consider. Actions to support and foster DEI are essential to successfully achieving the missions of academic medicine. The promotion of these efforts in medical education is part of a broader movement to dismantle systems of oppression in the United States, such as providing equitable support among medical school faculty with the goal of diversifying the physician workforce. To capture the impact of institutional investment in formal DEI efforts, new questions were added to the AAMC StandPoint™ Faculty Engagement Survey in 2021 to assess perceptions of diversity and inclusion in the medical school workplace and solicit suggestions for how to improve efforts related to DEI. I have been thinking about conscious and unconscious bias. This is in the context of the fact that my University (Cambridge) produces fewer GPs than any other medical school, despite the fact that, in my opinion, General Practice is the most intellectually demanding and stimulating career in medicine. GPs are trained generalists, who need to be comfortable dealing with uncertainty and managing complexity. We cannot succeed by becoming more and more expert in an ever narrower field. We need the humility to admit it when there is something we don't know, and great strategies and networks to find out not the 'right answer' (because in medicine those do not exist) but the best answer for our patient, within the limits of what is currently possible. I am privileged to be part of the most amazing community of practice. I have been able to reinvent my portfolio career as life events happened and I needed the flexibility to shift roles or geography or focus. But this is not about luck - it is because I chose to become a GP! Yet the number of times I was told on my journey to my senior medical leadership positions that ' you are too bright to be a GP' just shows how little many senior clinicians from outside primary care know about the work of the GP. This lack of parity of esteem from our secondary care colleagues is a perfect example of bias, and all too often echoed in the media. My call today is for you to take off your blinkers, read the research that shows that continuity of care in the community is a very powerful intervention for reducing premature morbidity and mortality, and recognise that getting the brightest and best medical students into General Practice (and Public Health) is the best way to reduce health inequalities and the health of the nation.

Grit and resilience. It seems they are NOT supposed to come easy. In fact, it seems grit and resilience are learned due to adversity. I’ve had my fair share of adversity. It was never fun, but boy do I enjoy the feeling now that no matter who or what tries to knock me down, I’m confident I can get back up again. What are your thoughts on #medicaleducation ? According to their narratives, they perceive adversity and a lack of support, leading them to rely heavily on grit and resilience to survive. Navigating through the ups and downs of the workplace is a common challenge for all of us, even for those just starting their journey, like medical students transitioning into the workforce. Researchers from Duke-NUS have conceptualised a one-page Professional Identity Formation framework in medicine, published in the Journal of the Association of American Medical Colleges, for medical educators and mentors. Today, I was invited for an interview by my residency program to share insights on my experience thus far as a resident doctor. I was asked to “Describe a particularly memorable or impactful experience you've had during your time in the residency program?” My response: Becoming a new mom during my residency has been a life-changing experience that has not only shaped me as a person but also as a resident physician. Balancing the demands of motherhood with the rigors of residency has taught me invaluable lessons in time management, prioritization, and resilience. I have been fortunate to have a supportive program and colleagues who have encouraged me to embrace this new chapter in my life, and I am so grateful for the opportunity to model for my child the values of hard work, dedication, and compassion that define our profession." My advice to prospective applicants considering the Brown Internal Medicine residency program? 1. Be prepared to be challenged and supported in equal measure. 2. Cultivate a growth mindset, and don't be afraid to ask questions or seek help when needed. 3. Prioritize self-care and wellness, and lean on your colleagues and mentors for support.
