🌎 The “Low-Carbon Prosperity in Progress: Transforming Transport in Asia” Conference, co-organized by #NDCTIA and GIZ Thailand's transport cluster, brought together leaders from across Asia in Bangkok this week.  Focused on achieving climate action and prosperity through zero-emission transport, the conference highlighted crucial steps towards a sustainable future.   🚌 As the regional conference of the NDC Transport Initiative for Asia (#NDCTIA), the event emphasized the importance of transformation within the transport sector. Discussions centered on setting a path to reach net-zero emissions by mid-century.   🤝 Collaboration was a key theme, with success stories showcased from China, India, Vietnam, Thailand, and the Philippines. These examples serve as inspiration for further action towards decarbonization across the region.   The conference program offered a variety of sessions, including:   🗣️ Regional perspectives from the Council for Decarbonizing Transport in Asia, along with keynotes from political partners in China, India, and Vietnam, provided valuable insights. Panel discussions explored industry transformation, lessons learned in NDC implementation, stakeholder engagement strategies, and emissions standards.   💡 Interactive workshops delved deeper into specific themes like zero-emission trucking, financing mechanisms for sustainable transport, and ensuring an equitable transition.   📌 A closing site visit to Energy Absolute's EV and Battery Plants in Bangkok showcased real-world examples of impactful sustainable transport solutions.   This conference not only strengthened ties within the Asian transport community but also charted a clear path for transforming our transport-energy systems towards a cleaner future. Furthermore, with climate targets and NDCs due to be updated in 2025, we believe the conference will contribute to the knowledge and international partnerships necessary to raise climate ambitions for transport in Asia. #TransportinNDCs (CT)

🌊 Happy World Maritime Day! 🌊 In 2023, Tana Copenhagen, commissioned by the Danish Maritime Authority, developed a concept note for the future ‘International Maritime Organization (IMO) Global Fund for Green Shipping.’ This initiative is designed to support the climate transition of shipping while promoting a just and equitable shift within the industry.🌱⛴️ The concept aligns with the IMO’s updated GHG Strategy, adopted in July 2023, which aims for net-zero emissions from international shipping by 2050.  Our work included mapping existing relevant international funds and proposing key principles for designing and managing the IMO Global Fund, ensuring alignment with global governance standards. In an exclusive Q&A with GreenPort, Mr. Wei Siang New, Director of Maritime Decarbonisation & Net-Zero Pathways, discussed several green objectives for #MPA. This includes our #decarbonisation strategy, which spans across various areas such as port terminals, domestic harbour craft, and international shipping.   ⏳ 𝟮𝟬𝟱𝟬 𝗩𝗶𝘀𝗶𝗼𝗻: MPA aims to achieve #netzero greenhouse gas emissions by 2050, aligning with Singapore's climate targets and the International Maritime Organization's GHG reduction goals for international shipping.   💼 𝗖𝗼𝗹𝗹𝗮𝗯𝗼𝗿𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝘄𝗶𝘁𝗵 𝗦𝘁𝗮𝗸𝗲𝗵𝗼𝗹𝗱𝗲𝗿𝘀: MPA works closely with industry stakeholders, including shipping and logistics operators, to reduce emissions from domestic marine transportation and promote the adoption of green technologies and practices. These include developing electric #harbourcraft, charging infrastructure, and providing #greenfinancing to support e-HC adoption.   🔋 𝗘𝗻𝗲𝗿𝗴𝘆 𝗧𝗿𝗮𝗻𝘀𝗶𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝗦𝘁𝗿𝗮𝘁𝗲𝗴𝘆: MPA is committed to transitioning Singapore's port terminals to a low-carbon future through cleaner energy adoption, automation, and #digitalisation, aiming for at least a 60% reduction in total emissions by 2030 and net zero emissions by 2050.   🛢️ 𝗔𝗹𝘁𝗲𝗿𝗻𝗮𝘁𝗶𝘃𝗲 𝗙𝘂𝗲𝗹𝘀 𝗦𝘁𝗿𝗮𝘁𝗲𝗴𝘆: Singapore is focusing on developing bunkering infrastructure for alternative fuels like #methanol, #ammonia, and #hydrogen to meet the future energy needs of the shipping industry. In addition, MPA will enable the sector’s multi-fuel transition through safe and efficient #bunkering operations and pilot trials.   🌍 𝗚𝗿𝗲𝗲𝗻 𝗦𝗵𝗶𝗽𝗽𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗖𝗼𝗿𝗿𝗶𝗱𝗼𝗿𝘀: MPA is actively involved in establishing Green and Digital Shipping Corridors with like-minded states and industry partners to develop zero or near-zero greenhouse gas #emission fuel supply chains and facilitate digital information exchange for efficient port operations.   🔜 𝗡𝗲𝘅𝘁 𝗚𝗲𝗻𝗲𝗿𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝗣𝗼𝗿𝘁: The #TuasPort project represents the future of Maritime Singapore, designed to be automated, intelligent, and sustainable, with a focus on #sustainability in its construction, operations, and energy use, aiming for net-zero carbon emissions by 2050.   Stay tuned as we continue to lead the charge for a greener, more sustainable #MaritimeSG.

My highlight of the month will be the ESPO (European Sea Ports Organisation) conference in Paris, France. Maritime sustainability has been an uncharted sea for me but knowledge is piling up, and what better way to gather it than straight from the source? Meet me and my colleague Ani Matcharashvili, and let's address the elephant in the room: Can ports achieve net zero? What solutions are out there for ports to implement and speed up their decarbonization strategies? What slows down adoption when we're literally boiling?
