One week count-down for our workshop at the DRS2024 Boston! If you believe in data as design research and love to walk around the city, the workshop "The human-centric isochrone: redefining the study area" is for you. With this workshop, we will challenge a data-driven method to map temporal dimensions of accessibility (isochrones) through the critical lens of our own experience of the urban space. We will invite participants to explore the surroundings of Ruggles station, near the event venue. Save the date: Mon 24th of June, from 2:00-5:30pm. 🚉In the (re)design of user-friendly stations - so relevant for the decarbonization of the built environment - walkability is a very important factor. However, the established data-driven approaches to design, using buffers or isochrones, fail to model human perception of distances. 🧠Alongside with Assistant Professor Dr. Manuela Triggianese and Post-doc Saba Golchehr, PhD, we will introduce you to these concepts in urban analysis, then bring you along a playful mission to collect human experience data. We will wrap up the day with an engaging session for the co-creation of our version of the human-centric isochrone. 👐🏽We expect to collectivelly discover an alternative perspective on how to define the study area prioritizing the human experience, combining the use of geospatial data for strategic and tactical methods with more visceral ways of thinking and working. After all, we are creative designers ;) Looking very much forward to it! #DesignResearchSociety #DRS Design Research Society (DRS) #NortheasternUniversity #HarvardGSD #MIT Center for Design

SPACEMAKING, OR WHY WE NEED ART OUTSIDE THE ART WORLD (AND HOW TO GET IT THERE) With our project SUSTAIN, a joint project of De Haagse Hogeschool / The Hague University of Applied Sciences and Avans University of Applied Sciences, we researched the role of so-called #Spacemakers. Spacemakers are parties that aim to contribute to system change by making space for art in unusual places, such as within the economy, science, or technology. The objective: have art play a meaningful role in the transition to a sustainable and just society. Six Spacemakers were part of the SUSTAIN research: Art Partner, Circus Andersom (Circus the other way Around), Future of Work, In4Art, Stichting V2-Organisatie, Instituut voor de Instabiele Media , and Waag Futurelab. Through this practical research, SUSTAIN provides more insight into the precise role, methods, and added value of Spacemakers in the necessary transition. With our research we aim to contribute to the further development of this field. SUSTAIN has resulted in two outcomes: * The Spacemaker Toolbox, a practical tool for Spacemakers to explore and professionalize their work from within. * The Spacemaker Stories, a series of booklets (‘cahiers’) in which we look at Spacemakers’ practices from a bit of a distance and help Spacemakers better articulate what they do, why they do it, how they do it, and what value/impact they create with it. In the weeks to come, we will be highlighting some of the key elements of our Spacemakers research. But do feel free to download the toolbox and cahiers in one go! The research was conducted by Jacco van Uden (professor of Change Management), Godelieve Spaas (professor of Economy in Common), Olga Mink, Marga Rotteveel, and Kim Caarls. While the 'actual' work (research and innovation activities) is being done in the other work packages, it is exhilarating to be part of this EU-funded consortium, driving impactful change together. Our collective hard work, creative thinking, and continuous refinement have culminated in the draft V4SAFETY framework. This draft is intended to foster further discussion within the consortium and advisory board, as well as with a wider group of external stakeholders. Curious? Check out our intermediate results » https://lnkd.in/eGZh86An #collaboration #scicomm #safetyassessment #scientificresearch SWOV | Ragnhild Davidse Govert Schermers
Our 4th GA, hosted by Chalmers University of Technology, took place at Lindholmen Science Park last week. Jointly, we celebrated our positive halftime review (last April in Brussels). With a draft framework (MS10) and core results in hand, we’re shifting focus outward. We've identified 25 user groups and will develop instructions to serve this variety of users... We’ll continue refining the framework, baseline approaches, simulation structures, and human modelling. Also, we’ll provide comprehensive guidelines for each framework step; from defining the evaluation scope to projecting results, and ensuring transparent reporting of assessments. https://lnkd.in/erxV_ADT Stay tuned as we advance towards improving #roadsafety through innovative simulation methodologies! 🚗💡 #simulations #innovation #horizoneurope CINEA - European Climate, Infrastructure and Environment Executive Agency

Doctoral researcher Lucas van der Meer from Z_GIS - Department of Geoinformatics, University of Salzburg presented the CITWIN project last week at the #mobilTUM2024 in Munich. This is a conference organized by the Chair of Urban Structure and Transport Planning at the Technical University of Munich (TUM openLAB Urban Mobility), focusing on the future of mobility and urban space. Special attention was paid to the concept of the 15-minute city, and its implementation in practice. Lucas talked about the potential and challenges of urban digital twin technology in the context of 15-minute cities. Can urban digital twins be more than just a hype? Can they be of practical use in the planning process of human-centred cities when we are aware of their limitations, and honest about them in our interpretation and communication? What questions can we actually ask them? And where do humans fit in? These are all questions that we aim to address within the project, moving towards a socio-technical perspective on urban digital twins with explicit human involvement in all phases of the feedback loop. Interested in the project? Follow this page on LinkedIn and reach out to us if you have comments, questions, ideas, or more. A big thank you to the organizing team at TU Munich for creating such an interesting and enjoyable event!

The use of composite structures in space applications is driven by the sucess in their use for aircrafts, as they demonstrate large reduction in weight, and consequently, lower energy consumption. Joaquín Alfonso Castro Cruces's work consists in developing a topological optimisation method for satellite structures with an innovating 3D-printing technology, whilst addressing additional constraints due to the criticality of the fibres orientation. #Space4ReLaunch #EarthObservation #ReusableLaunchers Wallonie - SPW Énergie Université catholique de Louvain Université libre de Bruxelles University of Liège Sirris | Innovation forward Multitel Cenaero Centre Spatial de Liège ULiège - RISE Pierre Duysinx
