"Donors must move away from setting overly stringent restrictions and priorities or constantly refreshing their funding strategies. The grantee partners we support — not the donors who fund them — are best placed to determine what strategies will advance their agendas.  Matching the talk with action when it comes to unrestricted funding is an important component of a harmonious ecosystem. Donors can offer their tools and resources while recognizing the know-how of their grantee partners. Fundraising teams and organizations will be able to come up for air, redirecting their energy to mobilizing growing numbers of supporters of human rights and delivering on their own added value. Most importantly, more money means that more flexible — and, therefore, more effective — funding will flow to movements." This is powerful and a must read for donors and those who work in that space, via Inside Philanthropy via Jen Bokoff and other contributors.

Over the last few years, we have been periodically reflecting on how we practice feminist principles of philanthropy in each of the Urgent Action Sister Funds: from how we work to build a culture of sharing and the ingredients of ethical and feminist crisis response, to how funders need to rethink risk and what feminist collective leadership has to offer philanthropy in these times. At Urgent Action Fund, Asia & Pacific, we are conscious of the power inherent in how we frame ‘why and how we do what we do’. Talking about philanthropy as ‘giving’ feels like a transactional approach. Framing it as ‘sharing’ makes it transformative. What a privilege to introduce this landmark global funding trend analysis report. Not withstanding the data and methodological challenges, it will come as no surprise to many that only 0.6% of global philanthropic funding between 2016-2020 benefitted indigenous communities. And an even smaller percentage of this amount went directly to indigenous led organisations. Given that indigenous peoples comprise 6.2 % of the global population and have been subjected to systemic historic and ongoing exclusion and oppression, the math just aint mathing. But there is hope! The research provides important baseline data and a level of transparency that we’ve never had before. We can use this data to inform more effective resource allocation, policy advocacy, leadership and governance planning and decision-making. The report highlights 20 recommendations framed by the 5 R’s of indigenous philanthrophy for practitioners and governors to critically discuss and apply to your own context. My hope is that in Aotearoa NZ Philanthrophy we might work better together to look at how we think about indigenous philanthrophy, indigenous data sovereignty, framing, approaches, collection, analysis and reporting. Building a more accruate picture of our current state will help us to plan and create the conditions to increase philanthropic funding to indigenous peoples in Aotearoa and beyond. Mauri ora.
