Message for the International Day of the World’s Indigenous Peoples As Indigenous peoples, we are the keepers of vibrant cultures, captivating traditions, and rich, colourful histories. As Crees, we have worked hard to maintain a strong connection with our culture and remain protectors and stewards of Eeyou Istchee. This year, the United Nations has declared the theme as ‘Protecting the Rights of Indigenous Peoples in Voluntary Isolation and Initial Contact.” It is evident that colonization has had a deep impact on Indigenous Peoples. Indigenous cultures and languages are vulnerable—not only here in Eeyou Istchee but across the globe. Our Indigenous brothers and sisters around the world face similar challenges in preserving their identities in a rapidly changing world. We can be proud of how we have maintained strong ties to our history, language, and culture. As Indigenous peoples, we share common barriers and difficulties. It is crucial that we stand strong together, supporting one another, alongside allies who advocate loudly for our rights as distinct peoples.

WATCH | Preserving indigenous languages is crucial for maintaining cultural heritage and identity. Indigenous languages carry the wisdom, traditions, and worldviews of the communities that speak them, providing a unique perspective on human experience and knowledge. They are integral to the cultural fabric, encompassing oral histories, folklore, and traditional knowledge systems that are often passed down through generations. The loss of an indigenous language means more than just the disappearance of words; it signifies the erosion of cultural diversity and the loss of a community's unique way of understanding the world. Efforts to preserve these languages are not merely about saving words but about maintaining the rich, diverse tapestry of human culture. This week on Situation Kritikal with Jonas Mbambo we explore the importance of Preserving indigenous languages. As a proponent of cultural diversity and preservation, I believe indigenous language revival is essential for honoring and celebrating the rich cultural heritage of indigenous communities. Language is not just a means of communication but also a reflection of identity, history, and tradition. By supporting efforts to revive and preserve indigenous languages, we can promote cultural resilience, foster intergenerational connections, and combat language loss and cultural erasure. https://lnkd.in/esttAxrH

October 14th: Indigenous Peoples' Day 🌾 On this day, we honor and recognize the rich history, resilience, and contributions of the Indigenous peoples of the United States. Here are three highlights to mark the significance of this day: 🌄Land Acknowledgment: The lands we inhabit have deep roots, and acknowledging the Indigenous peoples who were the original stewards is vital. Before the arrival of Christopher Columbus, diverse and vibrant cultures thrived across these lands for thousands of years. 🗣️Indigenous Languages: The United States is home to a remarkable diversity of Indigenous languages, each carrying its own unique cultural significance. Sadly, many of these languages are endangered, emphasizing the importance of preserving and revitalizing linguistic heritage. 💪Cultural Resilience: Despite historical injustices, Indigenous communities have shown incredible resilience. Today, they contribute significantly to art, literature, science, and more. Celebrating this resilience is a step toward recognizing the ongoing impact of their heritage. Let's use this day (and all days) to amplify Indigenous voices. #IndigenousPeoplesDay #NativeAmericanHeritage #hireclout

World Radio Day-13th February As proclaimed by UNESCO, this year's theme is "Radio: A century informing, entertaining and educating." We may take radio for granted and even dismiss this media as somewhat 'out of date' but for some it remains a lifeline. Cultural Survival (https://lnkd.in/e726Mqht) reminds us of the importance of radio in promoting indigenous languages: On the first celebration of World Radio Day in 2012, former UN Special Rapporteur on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples James Anaya (Apache and Purépecha) emphasized the importance of community radio for the world's Indigenous Peoples, "Radio has been a fundamental means for Indigenous Peoples to maintain their languages and to exercise and defend their rights." Cultural Survival continues to work to implement Indigenous Peoples' right to establish their own self-determined communication platforms as enshrined in Article 16 of the UN Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples. Of the estimated 7,000 known languages globally, 32 percent of them, which means as many as 2,300 languages, are spoken by Indigenous Peoples living in Asia. But lately, Indigenous languages are disappearing at an alarming rate around the globe.
