It was an absolute honor to participate in the I Marine Expeditionary Force (I MEF) change of command with these great Americans. Today, Lt. Gen. Bradford Gering relinquished his command to Lt. Gen Michael Cederholm. Well done to both leaders and their families. The U.S. Marine Corps has led the Joint Force in its aggressive modernization to meet the challenges of tomorrow—while remaining ready at a moment’s notice to respond to the crisis of today. I MEF is the leading edge of that modernization—where theory meets real-world application. The Royal Navy’s submarines will continue to be armed with one of the world’s most advanced torpedoes after successful trials of the BAE Systems next-generation Spearfish weapons system. Sea Acceptance Testing of the latest version of the Spearfish torpedo was achieved on board a Vanguard-class submarine during three days of trials off the coast of Scotland. It is the first time the next-generation Spearfish has been tested on a Vanguard-class nuclear-powered ballistic missile submarine and means the boats are now able to meet the latest threats when at sea. Spearfish has been the Silent Service’s weapon of choice for nearly 30 years, capable of destroying frigates, destroyers, and large warships, as well as hostile submarines. This modernised and improved variant – known as Spearfish Mod 1 – features a new warhead, a safer fuel system, a smarter electronic ‘brain’ and a fibre-optic guidance link with its parent submarine to improve its accuracy and lethality. Throwback Thursday- 📍 W-174 Range, Irusina Island, Okinawa, Japan On January 13, 2015, U.S. Marine Corps Cpl. Craig Lewis, a communications chief with the 5th Air Naval Gunfire Liaison Company, III Marine Expeditionary Force Information Group, used two stacked devices, the Joint Terminal Attack Controller laser targeting device, and the PAS-25 (a thermal optic), to see at night. Marines effectively combine the devices' capabilities to mark targets at night with a laser for precision targeting. 5th ANGLICO continues to train and conduct operations alongside regional allies and partners within the adversary weapons engagement zone, performing fires, liaison, and combined arms capabilities while keeping pace with modern battlefield realities. Throwback Thursday- March Maritime Strike 📍 Mariana Islands Range Complex, Guam On September 13, 2020, U.S. Marine Corps Cpl. Tyler Brees with 5th Air Naval Gunfire Liaison Company, III Marine Expeditionary Force Information Group, established communications with the Arleigh Burke-class guided-missile destroyer USS Barry (DDG 52) during a Tomahawk land attack missile live-fire exercise as part of the cooperative maritime exercise Pacific Vanguard. Pacific Vanguard serves as an opportunity to exercise and improve multinational interoperability at all levels; to improve tactical proficiency; and to adapt to ever-changing regional challenges. ANGLICO companies specialize in fires integration, fire support, and communication providing a liaison capability to joint and partner forces in support of planning, coordinating, and conducting terminal control of fires. October 1, 2024, will mark the 20th anniversary of 5th ANGLICO’s activation. 5th ANGLICO continues to serve as a key III MEF unit of action by remaining committed to regional security augments and a free and open Indo-Pacific. #MiddleEastTensions | UPDATE: Video footage of the US Navy amphibious assault ship USS WASP (LHD-1) in the Port of Limassol, #Cyprus today. There were rumors circulating on social media earlier that this footage was from Haifa, #Israel or Beirut, #Lebanon. The latter was highly unlikely due to force protection concerns. The USS WASP is the centerpiece of an Amphibious Ready Group (ARG), which also includes the USS NEW YORK (LPD-21) and USS OAK HILL (LSD-51). The 24th Marine Expeditionary Unit (MEU) is embarked on these three warships, and is composed of a command element, Battalion Landing Team 1/8, Marine Medium Tiltrotor Squadron 365 (Reinforced) and Combat Logistics Battalion 24. All in all, about 2,200 #Marines in total. A graphic explaining an ARG is attached in comments. An ARG would be perfect for responding to multiple contingencies, including Noncombatant Evacuation Operations (NEO).
