SPORTS: THE “GLUE” THAT “FUELS” COMMUNITY CONVERSATIONS AMONGST CHILDREN AND YOUTH   Local sports events bring the community together, which can increase social bonds and meaningful connections. Offenses often committed by children shouldn’t result in prison time. Sadly various laws disproportionately affect children who are poor, homeless or mentally ill. Adults too exploit marginalized children to commit crimes, while migrant children are excessively detained. Further, children belonging to minority religious or ethnic groups are more likely to be incarcerated.   Sports remains apolitical and universal language that is globally used to address the aforementioned inequalities. FARIJI programs includes organizing sporting events between the community teams and sports teams inside correctional facilities. Offering a platform for youth mentorship, mindset and Lifeskills conversations from incarcerated persons. Yesterday I had the pleasure of attendance and inclusion in our Impact Futures operations and quality roadshow 2024. Impact Futures UK The Childcare Company First Response First Aid Ltd This was a fantastic opportunity to take a day out of the academic calendar to look inside the organisation and honour the talent amongst the teams. As an Inclusion lead and an advocate for positive social action, mental health and well being, this was a privilege. However, whilst this was one sensational layer of the day and it’s offerings, what was even more special was the venue by which the event took place and it’s history as a contributor to equality. The drive for equality continues. The perplexities of what that looks like are shaped by the ever evolving landscape of inclusion itself juxtaposed against the ever evolving world. In 1863, the Emancipation Proclamation served as a major contributor to the emancipation of slavery and the movement towards abolishing racism and race discrimination. Yesterday, the awards were held at the Birmingham Town Hall. In 1835, prior to the proclamation, the first of many anti-slavery meetings was held at this very venue in which the statement … “Is is easy to say what shall be done”… features amidst a firm statement that intention must be followed by action. For years to come, this town hall would stand as a pivotal consistent space where the Birmingham anti-slavery society, on both a national and international footing, would take a lead role in petitioning against slavery. Yesteday, inside of all of the lights, trophies and glamour, was at the core, a wonderful celebration of humanity and education. In the investment of shaping a better and more fair world we must consider how working together is always better than working apart. We must advocate for and against injustices and we must do so with radical love, compassion and humility. We still have a long way to go in the world but what is wonderful is that we want to change it for the better. Collective action and humanity, shaped by love and celebration for our unity are absolutely the best ways forward to a fair and just society. #eqaulity #freedoms #radicallove

The UEFA Euro is over, and the next big event is already around the corner: the Olympic Games and Paralympic Games in Paris!🏅 As we gear up for this exciting time, I want to share some insights I gained from working towards my PhD project, which focuses on the development of youth athletes in parasport. It was just one of my last reads that I really felt like was worth sharing. The findings of Janine Coates and P. David Howe reflect the challenges athletes with disabilities face in finding their way into parasports. This recent study provides a deep dive into the roles parents play and the hurdles they overcome to support their children. The provided quotes from parents really give an insight into their experiences. Some key findings were: 💪 Parents in parasport often juggle multiple roles - supporters, administrators, coaches, and caregivers - all while facing a lack of local resources and funding. 🏫 Children and adolescents with disability frequently encounter social exclusion and inadequate PE opportunities in mainstream schools. This forces parents to look for community sports clubs and disability-specific organizations. 🌟 Despite these challenges, participation in sports greatly enhances self-confidence, social skills, independence, and a sense of belonging for young athletes with disabilities. 🤝 Parents benefit immensely from connecting with other parents who understand their unique challenges, providing much-needed emotional and practical support. What this means for our field: 🏟️ It's important to develop more local sports opportunities and improve the training of coaches to work effectively with disabled athletes. 🔄 Schools and community clubs should prioritize inclusivity, ensuring youth with disabilities have equal access to sports, but at the same time, provide the responsible persons with opportunities to educate themselves on the topic and the necessary resources to support these efforts. 📢  It is vital to increase awareness among educators and the community about the existing opportunities for children and adolescents with disabilities and how to support them to get into parasport. Making these opportunities visible and accessible to parents is essential for fostering inclusion, participation and ultimately talent development. This study is an amazing read for understanding the complexity of youth parasport and the essential role of parental support.
