In my second week participating in the IUCN Global Standard on #naturebasedsolutions organized by the IUCN Academy, the focus shifted to the application of NbS in urban areas, specifically emphasizing urban #greeninfrastructures in embracing #climateresilience . It was enlightening to discover that Indonesia has been implementing this approach since 2017, notably led by Jakarta through the establishment of Pergub on Hutan Kota and Ecopark projects, including the well-known Tebet Ecopark. This green haven nestled in the heart of Tebet offers a retreat from the urban hustle, featuring lush greenery, meandering paths, and vibrant flora. The park's eco-friendly design, incorporating principles like rainwater harvesting and sustainable landscaping, showcases Jakarta's commitment to accessible green spaces. However, a lingering concern arises regarding the feasibility of such initiatives in financially challenged cities. While Jakarta has successfully implemented these solutions, the question remains whether less affluent cities can afford or even possess the political will to embark on similar projects. Notably, former Jakarta governor Aniesbaswedan, now a presidential candidate, stands out for his demonstrated knowledge and strong political will, evident in his commitment to serving Jakarta's citizens to the best of his ability. I learned that this concept is applicable to any cities or urban areas in every corner of the country and the world. Yet, again, it’s dependent on how the government and the community committed to apply this concept in providing more sustainable and comfortable cities for everyone.

Each year, this megacity sinks by 1 to 15 centimeters due to excessive groundwater extraction, rising sea levels, and land subsidence. By 2050, significant parts of Jakarta could be underwater, posing a severe threat to millions of residents and local businesses. For businesses, the risks are multifaceted. The constant threat of flooding disrupts daily operations, damages infrastructure, and inflates insurance costs. Companies are forced to reconsider their long-term strategies, with many contemplating relocation to safer regions. The hospitality industry, retail, and real estate are particularly vulnerable, facing declining property values and wavering consumer confidence. In response, the Indonesian government has embarked on a monumental initiative—to move the nation's capital to Nusantara, in East Kalimantan on the island of Borneo. This ambitious project is not just a response to Jakarta's environmental challenges but also an effort to reduce the city's overcrowding and traffic congestion. The new capital aims to be a sustainable city, designed to withstand the impacts of climate change. However, the transition comes with its own set of challenges. Indonesia - named the most beautiful country in the world, has already made moves to shift our capital city from Jakarta to Nusantara (IKN) in East Kalimantan. Very wealthy in natural resources (oil and gas), but even wealthier in the spirit of sustainable circular economy, urban planning and development for social equity - Nusantara aspires to build a unique, world-class, smart city while continuously maintaining Indonesia's national symbol of 'Unity in Diversity' (Bhinneka Tunggal Ika). Located to the right of "Equator City", Pontianak which coincidentally, happens to be where my Taiwanese ancestors made their living through farming food and celebrating 'Chap Go Meh', a vibrant new year festivity I had witnessed in person. East Kalimantan region has a low population density (30 persons/km2) which means this spatial distribution gives room for niche projects specifically for the green & blue economy sectors. Nusantara (IKN) will be the pioneering zero-carbon capital city, with a strong circular economy, offering fair economic opportunity for every resident, high-tech logistics cargo systems such as "Sky Taxi E Hang 216" (YES, an aero vehicle, exactly what you had imagined - pictured below), with advanced public road planning, transportation system and unique infrastructures. Jakarta ranked most polluted city in the world. Indonesia’s capital Jakarta is the world’s most polluted city, according to a new study. Hotter temperatures, lack of rainfall, increased sunshine and low wind speeds are all factors that increase air pollution in Jakarta’s surrounding atmosphere during the drier months. PM2.5 concentration in Jakarta is currently 12.9 times the WHO annual air quality guideline value. A cleaner Jakarta can be built on the pillars of effective policy, collaboration and community-driven initiatives. Individual choices matter, but the coalitions and combined actions—as well as the voice of the city's population—holds the potential to bring about more significant change. #pollution #environment #savetheplanet #jakarta #indonesia

Today, we celebrate Jakarta’s 497th anniversary, its last as the capital. 🏙️ While the city prepares to pass the torch to a new city, Jakarta will remain the country’s economic heart. Jakarta serves not only its 11 million residents but also an additional 20 million in satellite cities, most of whom commute into the city daily. Despite this, one of the city’s greatest challenges remains congestion, causing estimated annual losses of Rp 65 trillion (US$3.95 billion). In response, the city administration has embarked on an ambitious plan: by 2045, it aims to triple public transport usage from the current 18.86 percent to 60 percent. #Cities | Tall Building #Decarbonization Tall buildings, especially commercial & residential contribute significantly to #CO2emissions for several reasons, including #energy consumption for cooking, heating, cooling, lighting & electrical equipment, etc. The energy used is often derived from #FossilFuels. Buildings are the cause of 40% of global #CO2 emissions. The taller the building, the more complicated it is to decarbonize. It bears repeating: If we don’t decarbonize buildings, we won’t solve the #ClimateRisks like what happened in New York City which accounts for 70% of #GHG emissions & ranked 3 in the #USA. Decarbonizing tall buildings is a critical aspect of addressing #ClimateChange & reducing the environmental impact of urban areas. The #ClimateSolution challenge in the cities of Asia Pacific that we shared in the previous post, is being present in Jakarta supported by Impact Hub Jakarta, #BAPPEDA #DKI, C40 Cities & CDP. To handle its share of responsibility in tackling the #ClimateCrisis & to achieve the Jakarta Government's #NetZero Target of 2030, the Regional Low #Carbon Development Plan (RPRKD - Governor Regulation No. 90/2021) comes with a holistic approach from the Government through working groups of Mitigasi & Adaptasi Bencana Iklim (MABI). So what should we do? #ESG principles can be applied in cities around tall buildings: 1) #Environment (E): reducing #waste & recycling through 'Waste to Energy', promoting energy-efficient & #RenewableEnergy practices, creating green spaces & #UrbanFarming, etc. 2) #Social (S): engage the #LocalCommunity to address their needs, prioritize occupants' health & well-being, encourage inclusive energy economic growth, etc. 3) #Governance (G): collaborate among stakeholders, promote transparency in the planning & execution, implement & enforce regulations, etc. If we can start implementing it in #Jakarta soon, then replicate it through C40 Cities in #AsiaPacific: Kuala Lumpur, Phnom Penh, Taipei, etc., and even in other global members from #NewYork to #Rome.
