Several weeks back, we held our very first Design Night to showcase the work of our engineering teams over the past couple of months. In the ultimate journey to achieve fixed wing autonomous racing, we celebrated our first quadcopter flight, successful SITL simulation, and our progress in computer vision research with Project FASTR! We were also buzzing with excitement as we unveiled our latest entry for the DBF competition - Project Orange Hornet! Like a real hornet, Project Orange Hornet represents a spirit of courage and fearlessness in the face of challenges, which the USYD DBF team has embodied over the past few months. We extend a heartfelt gratitude to everyone who turned up and supported us - your encouragement drives our achievements! With the competition just a few months away, we are so excited to reveal our aircraft for the season ✈️ #usydSUAVEteam #usyddbf #engineering #UAVengineering #studentclub #aiaa #aiaadbf #dbf2023 #dbf2024 #usyd #aeronautics

How did I make so many new connections in a crowd of 180,000 at #ces2024? I made it small. The highlight of my CES is were the 2 Hours I spent in the Supernal booth/tent. The visitors to the Supernal booth way over-indexed to Aerospace, Defense and especially the AAM, UAM and UAS where I have tons of connections from my time as President of AUVSI Cascade Chapter. In those 2 hours I could strike up a conversation to almost anyone I bumped into: • I chatted with Jean-Marc Lemaitre who invited me to an aerospace meet-up with Alain Charbonnier with BELWEST - Chamber of Commerce (the Belgian-Luxemburg group). I can directly attribute 20+ connections, including new friends from Embraer, to striking up a conversation with Jean-Marc (a master networker). Still so much follow-up to do from that night. • I finally was able to meet Adrienne C. Lindgren in person, who was on a panel along with Yolanka Wulff, director of Community Air Mobility Initiative (CAMI) for AUVSI Cascade during COVID. • Many conversations about BLVOS, vehicle certification and UAS vehicle product development. Sigma Design has those conversations everyday with the work Kenneth Williams does at our engineering facility at the Pendleton UAS Test Range. • I also made a ton of new connections the night before thanks to Nate Padgett and all of the awesome folks at Hardware Meet-Up, the night before when the hardware meet-up had it biggest in person event ever from all over the world. Another instance of making a big show small. The magic at any networking event is making it small. Relationships are built one at a time, re-connecting with old friends and meeting new friends. CES is big, relationships happen when you make it small. #uas #aam #uam #drones #auvsi #engineering #productdevelopment #networking

🚀 A dynamic team from ETH Zürich is making remarkable progress in constructing a groundbreaking flying wing, steering it through continuous deformation rather than traditional control surfaces. With six servos for main wing deformation and two for winglet yaw control, the team has successfully found the optimal balance between stiffness and flexibility using carbon fiber composites. Project Goals: -> Demonstrate the feasibility of morphing concepts in aerospace applications. ->Achieve a wingspan of 3 meters, a cruise speed of 108 km/h, and a max speed of 144 km/h. -> Implement controlled and targeted deformation of wing structures as a replacement for discrete control surfaces. Vision for the Future: -> Envision reduced energy consumption and minimized noise through the drag-efficient design of the flying wing. ->Anticipate improved maneuverability through innovative flight control concepts. ->Commit to testing new flight control and construction concepts in aviation. Ready for takeoff? 🛫 The pilot will skillfully navigate using a live feed from an onboard camera, backed by a safety pilot prepared to take control if necessary. The recent testing phase in Dübendorf has provided invaluable practical insights, transforming theoretical concepts into a striking reality. 🌐 The project's success is a testament to the seamless integration of technology, functionality, and design—a remarkable demonstration of dedication and enthusiasm yielding extraordinary outcomes. 🌟 Credits to Bionic Flying Wing. Today we're thrilled to share the results of our first system prototype as part of our project with NATEP and InnovateUK. What does it take to re-invent aerospace propulsion for the 21st century? Well it is not without its challenges, for the last 18 months the team have been hard at work designing and building a 1m scale technology demonstrator with a huge target of 1000N thrust. After a challenging process of design, refinement and a healthy dose of adversity we are pleased to state the claim we achieved a max thrust of 1204N at just over 1850 RPM - exceeding our target by 20%! With scope to improve system level efficiency by upwards of 27% and craft level efficiency of 32%+. The HaloDrive system is posed to be a game-changer for the future of aerospace propulsion. A monumental thanks go out to our consortium partners Motion Robotics, Sabe Fluid Dynamics and Ace Wiring without whom we would not be here today. Here's a first look at some of what we have been up to ahead of Farnborough International Airshow #FIA24 where you can find us for more information on the system. #FIA2024 #evtol #aerospace #electricpropulsion #networking #defence #international

Flying modular structure ModQuad—an inventive airborne modular robotic structure capable of autonomously self-assembling midair and collaboratively flying. Comprising agile flying modules with three-dimensional mobility, each built on a quadrotor platform within a cuboid frame, these modules seamlessly attach by aligning vertical faces. This mechanism allows a ModQuad swarm to rapidly construct flying structures midair, utilizing the robot bodies as building units. https://lnkd.in/gsNjdzw5

🚀 Revolution Aerospace have achieved a significant milestone in UAS Traffic Management (UTM)! After 15 months of collaboration with Thales Australia, our team successfully demonstrated a suite of strategic and tactical deconfliction scenarios within a collaborative, synthetic UTM ecosystem. Our UTM capability includes constraint management and conformance monitoring services, seamlessly integrated with our low Size, Weight, and Power (SWaP) Detect and Avoid (DAA) payload. This allows us to demonstrate real-time dynamic rerouting and tactical deconfliction, not only for UAV-UAV conflicts but also for conflicts between crewed aircraft and UAVs operating in close proximity within a UTM ecosystem. This accomplishment marks a key preparatory activity for our upcoming live trial of long-range middle- and last-mile cargo delivery by drone, scheduled to take place in the Whitsundays in June 2024. Stay tuned! https://lnkd.in/gsPeWfiF #RevolutionAerospace #UTM #DroneDelivery #innovation #technology #cargodelivery
