Reading the Spring issue of my alma mater's magazine, I was struck by how rapidly medical education must evolve to keep up with the future of clinical care in the age of AI—changes needed in just the next 2-4 years! One of the authors, Paul Root Wolpe, talks about human retrocession which is when we decide not to become experts in a domain because technology, namely AI, does it better. For instance, my complex arithmetic skills lag behind previous generations because of tools like calculators and Excel. In medical training, especially in medical school, a significant amount of time is dedicated to learning foundational knowledge and its clinical applications—areas where AI will soon surpass us. Will we have human retrocession for medical knowledge? What new skills do we need to replace it with? Also, what do patients think about all of this when they see their physician? Projects to improve the #fairness of #AI systems in #highereducation and to use the technology in addressing #bias in #healthcare are among those to have won funding under the Government’s AI Fairness Innovation Challenge run by the Department for Science, Innovation and Technology The Open University is leading the higher education project, aimed is at developing a solution to improve the fairness of AI systems in the sector and a framework for universities to develop their own systems.
