Just signed the CMO of a B2B company as a new client to help with their marketing efforts. The call brought up a lot of talking points that I think are worth discussing. So here is the scenario: You're hired as a CMO. The company tells you it wants to "Turn marketing into a revenue driver, and leverage AI". They expect you to add 30% to the sales pipeline by the end of the year. The job sounds exciting, and the ambitious growth targets are a welcome challenge. It's more than a job; it's an opportunity to leave your mark, to innovate. You're here to make a difference. Then, after the first few months, reality sets in. You are faced with a huge amount of MarTech debt. Each department works in a silo. Resources are scarce and marketing's role has been sales support at best. The C-suite lacks clarity on the true value of marketing as it has never measurably contributed to the business metrics. This scenario is far from unique. It's the reality for companies going through a digital transformation. These challenges will massively impact your ROI timeline. So many CMOs face a disconnect between the expected outcome, and the time needed to build a functional marketing team. The role of the CMO is notoriously volatile. You're in a position where burnout, departure, or termination are all too common, primarily due to unrealistic expectations for immediate ROI. The solution? Real growth doesn't come from chasing the latest trend (like AI) or setting lofty expectations (like a 30% increase in sales pipeline). It comes from setting realistic goals, understanding the scope of the transformation required, and committing to a strategic plan for sustainable growth. Over 20 years of building and exiting early stage companies has taught me if you can’t sell you can’t scale. But, it’s harder and harder to find and hire great sales talent, experiment in a market before you know it’s real, and candidly find success with traditional salespeople given how technical and complex products are becoming, and how fast they change! So, over the last few months we have worked closely with more than 75 organizations (thanks to all of you!) to train up and now launch AI Inbound Salespeople that work in B2B SaaS, Ecom/DTC, Membership Organizations, Social Impact, Travel and Visitors Bureaus, and even SMBs. It turns out that a few things are universal: Everyone needs more help selling, especially while you are handling other leads/customers/admin or off/after hours. People are frustrated with how often salespeople quit or how hard they are to hire and manage (especially during onboarding which can take 3+ months!). Outbound spamming, I mean … “sales,” is being tested with email deliverability and AI pollution inside your regular or LinkedIn inbox - it’s not dead but we need new/better ways. But, most of the tools (and I mean tools) out there were built by legacy engineers and not sales people empowered by AI leaders. So, those tools want to ingest ALL of your data (in questionable ways) and HOPE that you can find the value in what they are doing or superficially wrap around some kind of LLM (like ChatGPT et al.) and call it a day. Neither of those ideas felt like value that could scale and we tested with Fortune 100 and SMBs alike. So, we wrote a job description for what an AI salesperson needs to do and we tested it. We designed experiences that empower people to work with AI and create big outcomes. We made sure that everytime one of the 10+ major LLMs we integrate with release we CELEBRATE because we deploy purpose built AI sales agents that aren’t going to be eclipsed everytime one of the foundational models announce more amazing, sci-fi like features - we translate them all into a real capability to actually grow your top line. Tackling issues in marketing demands more than just increasing the workforce or budget. Let me tell you about a company I worked with last year. This was an early-stage tech startup competing in a pretty crowded market. They faced challenges in generating quality leads. The problem wasn't merely the volume of leads but the inefficiency in processing them — issues included: diverse intents being treated equally; lag in qualifying. The CEO’s immediate thought was to hire additional marketing staff and boost ad spend. I asked him to pause. Analyzing the data, I found: 🚫 Poor Engagement Strategies: Despite high traffic, the conversion rates on landing pages were low due to mismatched ad content and landing page design. 🚫 Flawed Data Integration: Misconfigured attribution, tracking codes, analytics and CRM setups led to unreliable data on marketing performance. If we’d just added more heads and money, we’d only be worsening the problem. Without fixing the root problems—optimizing conversion paths and ensuring accurate data flow —additional resources would only magnify the inefficiencies.
