Our application for Full Planning Approval for a replacement farm house in rural Angus has been Approved ! The house replaces an existing established farmhouse and is located on the same site but will comprise energy-efficient materials, solar panels, native planting, however we'll be respecting the farmhouse’s original character per Angus Planning Policy. Of course, we "win" Planning Approvals WAY more than we "lose" so it would be tedious to announce each Approved application that we make on Linkedin, but in this case a special mention should be made to the Planning Officer. It is our experience that that the Local Authority operative is rarely as engaged, helpful, flexible and measured as this one was. A couple of shortcomings in the information provided with the original application were quickly and simply addressed and an Approval Granted in less than the time given by Angus Council themselves to determine the application. It only took 7 days to set the first half of the cross laminated timber (CLT) modules for Integrated Design Cubed | IDCUBED’s workforce housing building in Montana. This project is the first large-scale CLT building in North America. To prepare for this, the foundations were built with precision - perfectly level and to exact dimensions. The modules arrived on site with finishes and fixtures pre-installed. Sustainable Architecture on the Allotment Needed to erect some protection for our tenderstem broccoli from hungry pigeons on our allotment this weekend - but how to do it only using materials we had available on site. A little glimpse into the challenges (and joy) of sustainable architecture. We started by using the small mesh cloches that had been used to protect the broccoli when it was first planted, setting them upright at the ends of the row. We pegged them in place with a couple of steel peg stakes that we had been using to mark the position of the row. Next we took some old chicken wire we found up by our shed and wrapped it around the perimeter of the planting, in an oval to protect the sides. Finally we inserted three long canes that had been used to stake runner beans across the top. We infilled the ends with the chicken wire that we had used on the earlier cloche set-up and then cut some more of the old chicken wire to cover the top. We pegged it in place with a couple of twigs so that we could remove it when needed to weed, and to pick our lovely broccoli later in the season. So, job done, very satisfying, no new materials, and all those used available again in future for another purpose. Now to the day job and how to make our buildings' architecture more sustainable. How much does a landscape plan cost? The cost of a landscape plan varies depending on the size of the plot, but also the complexity of the design. If there are a lot of different materials, for example, they will need a variety of different specifications which will need to be included on the plan. The same applies to planting. The more plants on the plan and the more intricate the planting design, the higher the cost will be, as each plant will have to be specified for height, distance between plants and whether they are to be supplied as container grown or bare root plants. The same principle applies to Landscape and Visual Impact Assessments (LVIAs) – the more complex the findings of the desk study and on-site assessment, the higher the cost.
