📝 Case Study: Planning permission secured for Sussex and Surrey Institute of Technology (SSIoT) Our Gatwick-based planning team was appointed by Chichester College Group to secure planning permission for a brand-new education facility south of Crawley College campus. The £15 million Sussex and Surrey Institute of Technology (SSIoT) is designed to provide high-quality learning environments housing specialist construction, engineering and digital ‘learning factories’. The designs embraced renewable energy technology and water harnessing and recycling systems to reduce energy consumption and wastage. Planning partner, Suzanne Holloway collaborated with key stakeholders on the design to ensure swift approval – from our client and the architects, to the local planning authority. Having addressed water neutrality challenges to deliver an efficient and sustainable development, planning approval was achieved. Construction is already underway and the centre is due to open to students in Autumn 2025. DONEGAL MOVES TO ZERO: Recently we handed over two ‘A’ rated educational schemes for secondary colleges, completing a busy period of installs across the ‘Hills of Donegal’. 🍃Situated on one of the most picturesque sites in all of Ireland, just on the edge of Mulroy Bay, Milford, a new, two-storey classroom block is now fully-utilised at Mulroy College. Spanning over 880 sqm, the new block consists of seven mainstream classrooms, three SET rooms, two offices and washrooms. Completed in a sargasso and oyster grey colourway that’s sympathetic to the backdrop of Mulroy Bay, Mulroy College is now benefitting from a new building that’s comfortable, cost-effective, and environmentally friendly, creating a healthy learning environment for the school community. 🍃Just 15 kilometers away, a new energy-efficient and sustainable modular building has been installed at Errigal College, Letterkenny. Offering an additional 840sqm of space and built to #GreenBuildingPractices, the standalone, two-story block was completed within six months, and has already achieved a 'best in class' BER A rating. With both buildings manufactured offsite in our premises in Co. I'm very pleased to announce that our "Resilient and Sustainable Buildings" book was published by the American Society of Civil Engineers. This book reflects four major National Science Foundation (NSF)-funded projects that focused on different aspects of building resiliency and sustainability from single buildings to large communities. The book was sponsored by the SPEED committee of the Infrastructure Resilience Division of ASCE. I want to extend sincere appreciation for the efforts of our lead editor John van de Lindt and my other co-editors, Mehrdad Sasani and Gordon Warn, to make this book a reality. On Thursday, March 21st, Laura Katon, Specification Manager at Unilin Insulation will be presenting a CPD to the students of the University of East London at the Atrium of the AVA Building, Docklands Campus, London E16 2RD. This CPD will also be available online to CIAT members. Laura will be presenting on ‘Designing to Zero Carbon’. The CPD introduces the Government’s response to the Part L consultation, the proposed timetable to introduce Part L reviews – in particular 21 and 25, and Future Homes Standard. The CPD also focuses on the following: Reviewing Government's commitment to a ‘fabric first approach’ to zero carbon through regulations. Typical specification of Part L and Future Homes Standard for fabric compliance. An introduction to various climate change initiatives while exploring embodied carbon as a primary target on such initiatives.
