Bristol, Walsall, Sunderland and Bury are among 54 councils set to share £1.2 million in grants in the third round of funding from the Chewing Gum Task Force. Launched in 2021, the task force was established by Defra and is administered by Keep Britain Tidy and funded by gum producers. They will receive grants of up to £27,500 to pay for cleaning and signage, and a fully funded bespoke gum litter prevention package. According to Keep Britain Tidy, littered gum affects around 77% of England’s streets and 99% of retail sites. The four councils are estimated by the charity to spend around £7 million cleaning up gum. https://lnkd.in/gYYbc5BZ

CDS Vic a success! The Victorian Container Deposit Scheme (CDS Vic) has collected over 100 million containers, issuing $10 million in refunds within the first two months. The CDS processes an average of 10 million cans, cartons, and bottles each week, as households process an average of 129 containers for each transaction. Regionally, Mildura, Shepparton and Kangaroo Flat have shown the highest participation rates, while Melton and Hallam are the top-performing refund points in Melbourne. CDS Participants may opt to claim the refund or donate the payments to over 1600 participating charities, sports, community, environmental, or educational groups. Aluminium cans constitute 53% of all returned containers, followed by Polyethylene terephthalate plastics (PET) at 26% and glass at 18%. The network of refund points is set to expand to meet increasing demand. Get involved! Together with European Food Banks Federation - FEBA, FESI, TIE: Toy Industries of Europe we are addressing a crucial issue affecting businesses and charities in the EU with our joint statement on VAT relief for #donations. Many businesses face additional VAT costs when donating surplus goods to charities, which discourages donations and runs against the EU's sustainable development objectives. To address this challenge, we are calling on the European Commission to take the initiative to reduce VAT on donations to charities. This initiative would promote sustainable development, prevent waste and support charities while ensuring fraud prevention and minimal bureaucracy.
